357 Marlin Cowboy to the range today (Target pic added)

Post by Old Savage »

Had a chance to shoot the new .357 Cowboy today. Blazer 158 gr ammo. Very pleased. First three shots were in a nice 1 1/8" group about an inch and a half over the front sight off the bench with factory open sights at 50 yds. Eight of the first ten were in a 1 5/8" group. I pulled one high out of the group and another low by a couple of inches but it was clear those were my own errors. After about 20 rounds I shot a separate 3 shot group at another target which also ended up 1 1/8" at an inch and a half high. So the first group of the 25 rounds and the last were in the same place. This was more consistent than my carbine which seems more sensitive to velocity variations. Here are the rifles.

Here is the target, I like the two small groups within - makes me think that the way I am seeing the brass bead in the bright day creates some variation. More concentration might bring those together. Sorry to say I openly flinched at the report of a Garand next to me as I was squeezing on the low shot.

It was a little harder to use the bottom of the white target on the bottom right as a reference but seems to have worked about the same.

You know, the 22s show a similar pattern in the spread - my tendency? - Might learn something here.

Thanks Jim, it has turned out to be so. I wish you the best of luck with the 45 Colt and the hogs. Should be just the ticket.

Congrats, OS! Sounds as if it's a great performer with groups like that.

I handled one recently in a local shop, but couldn't bring myself to part with the $629 asking price.

I've seen a couple of those Cowboys in a local store and it was hard to walk away. Glad to hear they shoot as good as they look.

Nice rifles (or should I say, nice carbine and nice short rifle) and glad to hear (errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, read) that all went well at the range. One of my local gun shops has two of the .357 Cowboys in stock but I'm waiting to see if he get a 44 Magnum Cowboy in.
