OT - Added an animal to my collection today

Post by 86er »

I was working in San Antonio today so I called my taxidermist friend and asked him to meet me with my Blacktail Deer mount that is completed. He asked me if I had my dart gun with me. He explained that a friend of his had four or five "black goats" that were frequenting his hay bales that are for his cattle. The ranch is not fenced, only a 4 strand barbed wire perimeter. He doesn't know where the goats came from. I told the taxidermist to go pick up my dart gun, the toolbox and drugs and meet me. After he met me we went to a small property North West of San Antonio. We drove out following the creek bed brush and checking the hay bales. After a little while of sloshing through the mud I spotted four black animals. To our surprise, one was a catalina style goat, another was a black hawaiian ram, and the other two were four horned rams. One of the four horned rams had four curled horns sweeping backwards. The other was the "classic" four horned style with two straight heavy beams in the center and two curled horns coming 90 degrees out of the head. This classic styled ram reminded me of the "devil four horn" we recently had at our place. Neither of us had a gun but the dart gun so we began darting the rams for relocation. The classic four horned ram was always far away and was smart enough to seek cover, so we just could not get a dart in him. I've hunted plenty of four horned rams with clients but never shot one myself. After running low on drugs and darts I decided to try to kill him with the gun I did have, my Glock 23 .40 cal. At about 30 yards I hit the ram in the chest and he started to trot forward. After he took 5 leaps forward and was still moving I hit him again and he was knocked down. By the time we walking over to him he was dead with one 165 gr CCI Gold Dot through a shoulder and into the opposite and the other through the ribs and out the other side. When we got him back to my truck I took the Blacktail from my friend and pointed to the Four Horn and said "Trade ya"! He'll be a cool addition to the collection and even though the "hunt" wasn't much the mystique of "where did he come from" and the fact that he was free range makes him a better trophy to me than shooting one on my own place.

He was a lot easier to kill than El Diablo.

Wow,...For a minute, I thought it was the "Return of Un-killable 4 Horned Devil Ram" of last year.

There's almost something evil looking about those things. Enough to give a little kid nightmares.

Looks like fun. Maybe the next time you hunt a goat in Hondo, you should do it with your Glock. 8)
