Most .243's in other actions (bolt and semi-auto) have 22" barrels.
What would I lose by going with a 20" barrel that's available in the Browning BLR? Will the muzzle blast be noticeably worse from the shorter barrel? It's bad enough on a longer barrel, in my opinion.
How about trajectory and range?
I understand that they have to make it 20" for proper proportion, etc., but I don't want to get something I don't like.
Neither you nor the game will be able to tell the difference. Might seem a little louder, and the velocity will be just a little less, but nothing to worry about.
Just stand 2 inches closer to the target.
Makes sense, if you try not to think about it.
Basically you don't loose anything ballistic wise, and the difference in muzzle blast isn't anything readily detectable.
I clocked some loads of 40 grs of H414 and 100 gr rem coreloc bullets from my blr at 2950 fps .
My first centerfire rifle was a Remington 700ADL 20" Carbine in .243. The five deer I shot with it, before I switched to a .444 in 1967, never complained, or knew what hit them, either.
A friend of mine uses a ruger international @ 18". He has used it for years even on large red deer and never complains. I doubt it is legal in dumb Britain but he don't care and nor do I!
Don't worry about it friend just shoot it
