M88 Winchester

Post by johnly »

There's a pre-64 M88 on a local dealer's rack for $470. It's a first year production and the wood is really nice. The sights have been removed.. no big deal. The big negative is that a Pachmayer recol pad has been added, and the stock shortened so that the length of pull is about the same as factory specs. I already have a pre-64 M88 in 308 and 284, and really want a 358.

Will I burn in levergun hell  if I alter this rifle further?

It already has been messed with so what the heck. Is it in 358 now? If so I would snap it up, great cal. If not would the cost of changing to 358 be a little much? Just my .02

It doesn't matter to a collector.

If it were me who lusted after 88s and .358s I'd have done it to a NIB .308 or .243.
Sincerely,

Hobie

It's ~$145 for a re-bore job by Jesse Ocumpaugh. And a few more $$ to have the neck area recut for the 358. So I'll be into the rifle for about $650 when the work is done.

If I wanted a 358 I would do it if you have confidence that the end result will be a good shooting gun, that you will like. You will not find a 358 model 88 for 650 dollars, anywhere unless you are very lucky.

Just got off the phone with Jessie Ocumpaugh and he'll rebore a M88 308 to 358, restamp the barrel and open up neck and re-throat the barrel for $160 including shipping. What a deal!
