Shipping question

Post by bluesman423 »

I need to sell a few lever rifles to raise money. Can anybody tell me how to ship? Interested in legalities, who will ship (USPS, UPS, etc), best way to package if you don't have the original box?

Any advice will be appreciated.

I always ship rifles priority mail, insured in a plastic hard case packaged inside a cardboard box with delivery conformation to an FFL. 1886.

Just make sure you pad the muzzle and butt, of the rifle, with bubble wrap because they will slide inside the hard case.

...and NEVER write anywhere on the box that a "rifle", or a "gun", or anysuch thing, is inside. Remember, you are just shipping something to someone else...

I agree as above. The Post Office does NOT want anything on the package that references firearms. The standard questions they ask about explosives, liquids, etc. do not apply to what you are shipping and can be answered, no, truthfully.
Shipping to a C@R holder is OK if you have a C@R legal gun, and you get a copy of their license before you ship.
what many people don't know is that you can ship a handgun through the US Mail system from FFL to FFL holder. All it takes is a filled out form that the PO has and a copy of the shipper's FFL license that they keep.

I'm paranoid, so I like to go from FFL to FFL. It costs a little more, but takes any procedural burden off of me.

I know, the law says a non-FFL holder can mail to an FFL holder, but the ATF are the very definition of jack-booted thugs, so I like to err on the side of caution.

I like FedEx because their tracking is updated more frequently whether is it Ground or Air. Their insurance rates are a little lower than other carriers. You can ship to an FFL so long as you verify it is a legitimate firearms business without obtaining a copy of the FFL first.

I have been very happy using FedEx. Definitly use extra padding, bubble wrap or whatever, tape it on, so it stays in place. I recieved a rifle that took a 2200 mile UPS bounce, kick, roll in a cardboard box with no padding or wraps of anykind. The rifle was a mess.

A very important part of selling online is to communicate, clearly and honestly with the buyer. It is better to annoy someone with redundent questions than to assume you both are on the same page.

The last time I shipped one (late in 2007) the UPS agent said I could not ship it to the FFL dealer to sell it for me.....duh, So I told her that I was shipping it to the dealer for repairs and presto she accepted it.
I only wish they knew the rules as well as we do.
