OT when 23 paces is to far....

Post by Nath »

Here I am saluting a fox,
[img]
I took a walk today in the wind and rain. I took the 410 and got in some thick brush to do some calling. Nothing came so I moved of after 20mins only to as I crested aridge in the thick stuff to have a fox staring at me at what turned out to be 23 paces. Well the little 410 barked out and he ran away. The pattern was smack on him as illustrated by the wet brush. I foolishly opened the gun to reload only to have said fox reappear to my left at less than 30 paces. I missed a second shot through haste! I spent the next hour and half trying to find him. I was asking alot with a 410 on that kinder shot, side on would of been perfect. I rang the keeper and he will look tomorrow. I did not have my dog with me as she lost a claw the other day, this would of been an ideal situation to see if the young bitch would of followed the trail. Not that is in her breed but she has seen enough with me to know what a fox is and what usually happens to them.
I felt sad for the fox but whilst I was looking for him I found many patches of woodcock feather and pheasant so I guess he's had quite a ball in there any ways. I guess sooner or later if you shoot enough it will go wrong sometime. Should of had a lever should'nt I !
I made my way to camp and lit my pipe and saluted the poor bugger. Whilst this pic was being taken another fox was working pheasants near by I could hear-I did not bother to look for him!
On the way home I shot 5 squirl and on dark watched woodcock and duck flighting on the wind, wonderfull.

Nath, Yea, sometimes they get away wounded--oh well, they are predators. Very neat pic--When I first saw it, it looked like an old WW1 picture.--------Happy shootin'----------Sixgun

I really like your style and hunting gear, it hearkens back to the days of old. If your photos were B&W it would be hard to tell.

Guess which one is Nath......

Well now, as I am getting older I do find my self preffering the older ways. What with a 30/30 and even older the 22. How old is Hornet? must be nearly 90 years. My muzzleloading shotguns and a cartridge sidexside using BP loads. Say how old is .410? Modern life does nothing for me really, don't really hanker for modern gadjets any more. Use to go crazy for the latest motorcycle but even those tastes have gone backwards a little. I guess I yern for a world with alot less BS and more honour/respect.
