In its day, thats the mould design that was used to melt down linotype. Then it was made into type. (and melted over and over) Its a pain in the butt to put in a casting furnace, hence, the bandsaw method. ------------------Sixgun
Sixgun,
Great idea!
For those of us that don't have a bandsaw:
You can break up a linotype bar with a sledge hammer by placing a 2x4 under either end and also as the pieces get smaller.
A number of years ago I aquired several bars (like Sixgun's picture) of what was supposed to be linotype. They all broke up nicely with the exception of one . All it would do was bend regardless of which way I hit it. Turned out that it was a lead / tin alloy masquerading as a bar of lino.

TedH,
I know where to get bars like that . . under my basement stairs. I have 'em layered about 8 across and stacked 7 layers high.
And like w30wcf I too break them up using the hammer method. A bit noisy and the pieces aren't as neat looking as Sixguns but I bet our bullets look the same.
As for tailgaters, I think we just learned a practical use for zinc wheelweights.

OK this is a little OT of the OT post but what the heck. Has anyone ever converted or modifyied their bandsaws to cut metal. I'd like to cut aluminum on mine, on occasion, and I tried it once. Blade speed must be too high cause it just burned up the blade and didn't cut worth a hoot.
I see about the slow cut blade, but I was even using a metal cutting blade.

Mike, 'ya gotta be real lucky to get linotype as it is not used anymore. A couple of years ago I got lucky when I was in this gunshop shooting the bull about casting and this guy came up to me and said he had 5 or 6 thousand pounds of the stuff. I followed him home and bought $400 worth for .60 a pound. I think I'm gonna head on down there again and I hope he is still alive as when I saw him he was drunker than heck and an old timer toboot-------------SixgunMikeS. wrote:So where do you get linotype?

Handirifle, I just don't know as I had the same problem. I burnt up a metal blade cutting up a piece of conduit. I cut off two pieces and that was it. I think you have to buy a quality blade and go real slow. For cutting metal, I use a 12" cut off wheel mounted on a motor-----Sixgunhandirifle wrote:OK this is a little OT of the OT post but what the heck.
