CORRECTION...357 mag on its way out?? Its been a hard day

Post by grahng »

I recently pruchased a Rossi 92 in 357mag. Since then, I have been rading that that cal is on its way out and soon the ammo will be very diff to locate. Anybody know anything about it. Should I get out of the Rossi while I can?

I stopped caring about Factory .357 almost the minute I got my Rossi from NKJ.

The Rossi shines best with handloads. Start simple. Buy/aquire as many .357 brass/ammo as you can afford then get a .38/.357 Lee Classic Loader (whack a mole) and a Lee Anniversary Kit in .38/.357 and don't look back.

No finer Close/Intermediate Range rifle will you find... and no way will .38/.357 be as hard to get in the long run as ANY military caliber (9mm), mid-volume (sales) caliber (.44 Mag) or "antique" caliber (.45Colt)

Yep fer sure you should get rid of that 357!

Tell you what...... and I'd only do this for a lever brother on this board, but you can send that thing to me and I'll take it off your hands for a fraction of what you paid for it!!

Seriously, in this part of the country, I was seeing 357 ammo two months before 9MM, 40 S&W, or 44 mag showed up on the local shelves. Keep it and enjoy it. You won't be sorry!

I"m sure Obama would like all ammo to be hard to get. But the .357 will be here a long time. My model 92 in .357 will be the last I get rid of.

Since its inception in 1935, MILLIONS of .357 guns have been made. Fodder will be around for at least the rest of our lives.

The foolishness some gunwriters will spout just to get readers agitated!

Folks have been saying the same thing bout the .45 LC for nearly 100 years. They've been saying it about the .44 S&W Special since the 1950's. Both cartridges are more popular today than they've been in decades!!

It is all BS! How in the world can anyone think that the most effective defensive handgun cartridge is "on its way out" is beyond my comprehension!!

Ammo might be hard to find and expensive but the same can be said for all ammo these days.

Pay attention youngins'...Doc knows his stuff!

Where in the heck does stuff like this come from... and no offense to the questioner.

In spite of the fact that I much prefer the .44 & .45...the .357 Mag. is the one main sixgun I carry & use. For the last 45 yrs. Sorry, but this kind of tripe gets my dander up.

Being "old" is a distinct advantage. Growing up on Skeeter, Elmer & Dan Wesson gives us an edge in what works & what doesn't. That's why the .45 Colt is still around...the .44's are still the standard & the .357 will be around long after we've all turned to dust.

Who writes this tripe?

I'll stick to the tried & true...And I will keep the council of the old gray hoary heads & my own.

Tell me boys...where does this stuff come from?

Hey, once California passes that stamping law, revolvers will be the rage for gangs so they won't have to pick up their brass...

Seriously, I would bet .357 is on a resurgence now that so many rifle chamberings are available and in use in CASS and silhouette. Ok, maybe revolver sales are a little slow, people like those sideways pistols. But the idea of .357 in a carbine is fairly new in the grand scheme of things, and it caught on for a reason.

What was the statistic, it has a 99% one-shot effectiveness rate in police use? More than 44 mag? Something like that.

Good morning
Sure the 357 mag will disappear.... but a whole lot slower than the 41 Rem mag did vanish away into them there hills.
I just love it when the "Experts" make thier "Profecies". Imagine how many "blind sheep" will begin to mass sell thier 357 lever guns at cut rate prices. YIPEE... HAPPY DAYS will be HERE AGAIN !!!
But you did RIGHT by asking ! A reloader has nothing to fear about ammo availability. I have been shooting a 45-60 1876 Winny (1883) for years. My 50-70 Trapdoor (1866) has a half ton of lead through it. My 1895 cal .30 Army (1903) still chugs out 220 cast. And the 38-40's (pre 1899) have never lacked something to digest. So as long as there is a reloader about, especialy a mold man, there are gonna be lever slapping up & down for a long time to come. Epecially with those FINE ROSSI rifles still getting made.
I have 2 in the long gone dissapeered 45 L Colt (well my son has one). Neither has ever had a FACTORY slug in it OR a jacketed "Thang" touch the bore.
Long live the man who will not become a slave to the stores but learn to take care of his own needs.

I would only worry about it if you were a Kali resident.

Since Arnold signed their ammo bill, I would think everything's gonna be hard to come by there, after Feb 2010.

Since .357's are on the endangered species list, i am setting up a shelter for homeless and wayward guns. Just send them all to me and i will show them love and feed them well ! Initial inhabitants of the shelter are ppictured below. Donations are tax deductible because its a "not for profit" operation

(but in all seriousness to the OP, the .357 is going nowhere anytime soon --- enjoy you carbine and a couple of companion pistols on down the line never hurts)

Please quote the source of your reading, so we'll know enough not to waste our money on that magazine, or bother to believe anything that the author of the article writes. I just got myself a Rossi 357 trapper model, have plenty of brass and the rest of the makin's, and as far as I'm concerned, if the 357 is "going out", it's probably "going out" for a walk in the woods in my new gun. It seems like this caliber "goes out" that way a lot, with a lot of members of this site, and others. Gun writers that write this stuff belong in the same garbage bag as politicians!

Take your new 357 out today! For some fresh air!

though it isn't originally from the era, I'm given to understand that the .357 cartridge even works well with black powder. I'd imagine there's nearly as many .357 revolvers out there as there are Glocks. The guns are certainly (and with great reason) among the most popular for shooters who don't have the necessary interest to be good with an auto pistol. The flexibility to use .38 Spl makes it tame and pleasant for any shooter while still able to breathe fire at need.

I can think of a lot more deserving cartridges to 'go away' before the .357.

No way. This ain't even a good joke.

Yep, probably one of the top five "won't disappear" cartridges out there. Merry Christmas to you as well!

A 358156hp over case full of 4F (22gr?) hits around 1550fps from my Rossi.

It hits around 900fps from my 2.5" SP101.

Still pretty useful there...

in a wheelgun, the.357 is the most useful cartridge ever invented. from .38 wadcutters for cheap target shooting and small game hunting, to the 125gr. hp. for self defense. 158 jsp for deer. and 180 grain hardcasts for CLOSE UP big bear protection. it gets better in a rifle. a .357 lever with a 16" barrel would be hard to beat for a self defense/ survival rifle. i would bet BIG$ ,that the .357 would be one OF THE VERY LAST!!!!! to go.

With the old style, hyper expanding (read shattering) 125gr grain bulliets out of a 4" barreled revolver it was 96%.

It may have gone down since the newer Max weight retention types like Gold Dot, Silver Tip, SXT, XTP, ect. For the way the old SJHP's were made, that paticular loads velocity and construction were in the "balanced sweet spot" in both penitraition and fragmenting at the right places through the wound track. For it did not "blowing up" too shallow and yet fragmented completely near the end, so as not to have overpenitration concerns. The older older constructed type rounds are available, but harder to find. I use Federal's 125Gr Hy-Shock SJHP's their excellant. But their are others, but I can't recall the loads available from other manufacters.

The 125 gr. load still the yard stick that all other rounds are judged. Granted today as long as you use any round .38 Spl / 9mm in power and up, your one shot stops rate is trivial, for their very close. Most of them are the newer "max weight retention" types so it isn't all bad depending on what caliber and barrel length.

By the way, the 110Gr .357 mag out of a 6" barrel will give you a 98% one shot stops. The only round that beat that is a 12Ga. shotgun slug!!!

FWIW, the round that on top now in auto pistols of standard lengths, is the .40 S&W, 155gr Hydra-Shock gives you a 97% one shot stop. Got the ole' standby .45 Auto? 96% with a standard pressure load and a 5" barrel. As good as the .357 and a non-magnum round to boot, thats not bad.

9mm you'll have to go for either Federal's 115Gr +P+, Cat # 9BPLE their a "police only" load, so availability is spotty. The other one to get is 9mm 115 Gr. +P made by Corbon.
