Best scope for .243 Winchester?

Post by getitdone1 »

What's some of your opinions about the ideal scope for a .243 Winchester gun?

I now have a Tasco World Class 6-24x on my gun. It has small dot reticule and focus adjustment on objective end--which is a pain. Every time you change the distance of target you need to adjust this. Expect that's why so many shooters call 9-10 power--without this bothersome focusing adjustment--enough power.

I've had more Leupolds than anything. I've always heard that the non-variable power gives more clarity than the zooms. I know a 10x Leupold with big objective lens would give a great sight picture but it limits you to longer shots--at least to a great degree.

Another thing I don't like about this Tasco is when you have it at 24x your eye distance and position from scope has to be just about perfect or you don't get a "full view." No doubt the more expensives zooms are better in this regard.

Expect a good to excellent 3-9x would be about my best bet. I do like a small dot reticule for long distance shooting. Maybe one of those "military type" scopes with the multiple dots for accurate hold over and range finding. Believe their rather pricey.

I have owned many scopes, but in terms of magnification for hunting purposes, a 4X has been plenty to 200 yards or so on deer size game...

Hard to beat a 3-9x40 for that rifle.

new scope

Post by edsguns »

I've ownd many different types of scopes and consider Leupold to be my overall favorite type. That being said, I recently purchased a 3-9x40 Burris Fullfield II at a great price and am impressed with it's brightness and clarity. Mine happens to have a German type reticle which likely will not suit your needs. I have seen many places "Midway", Midsouth Shooters Supply" and "Graf and Sons" all have the same scope for a good price with a Ballistic plex (multi-dot format) reticle. I'd suggest checking them out as I got mine for $146. delivered and I feel this scope to be on a par with a VXII 3-9x40. I thinks it's a great buy today for a quality scope. Good Luck.

I like Leupold for their warranty, and I'll agree with edsguns about the Burris 3-9x40 Fullfield II. I have two of 'em and like 'em very much .... great brightness and clarity, and the price is certainly right.

Cheers,

Anything in a good quality ( I have Leupolds and Weavers ) from 4x - my first antelope, very small, was at 280 yds with a Weaver 4x (seemed plenty) - to a 2.5 to 8x would be my choice. I have 4x, 1.5-5x, 6x, 1.75-6x and 2.5-8x and all are good for a .243 IMO.

A 3-9x would be great in variable, but I like a fixed power, and the 6x seems just about perfection to me.

Triggernosis,

Some might call it a lever but most would call it a bolt handle. It's a lever too. Browning A-Bolt

IMO the Bushnell 3200 Elite 3-9X40 cannot be beat at any price except perhaps by a 4200 Elite.

I think the 3X9 is the best type for you, but if you do more varmiting than deer hunting, I would then suggest a good 4X12!! Art

I have used my .243 mostly for woodchucks, range can be from 100-350 yards or so. I use a Redfield 6x-18x with a dot reticle & wouldn't switch.

I agree with most everyone on this - Leupold and Burris both make a great product, with Leupold being slightly more popular. I have 4 Leupold VX-I in 2-7x - so that shows you what I think. I think - a sleeper budget scope is the Bushnell Trophy - which the 3x-9x can be had for around $100 - I own one and the optics, I feel, are very good for a $100 scope.

+1 for the Burris Fullfield II 3x-9x.

I have one of these on my .243 as does my cousin. No complaints. Good warranty and priced right.

I shoot one of those A-Bolts, too....in .270. It wears a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 w/ Z-Plex reticle. Out to 300 yards the 9 power is fine for deer. If I were shooting varmints much past that, I'd probably go for more power though.

Whatcha plan on shooting with the .243?
