1895 in 45-70 for Ground Hogs

Post by miestro_jerry »

How many of you ground hog with a 45-70? I was think of using a casting 310 gr bullet. I want to test this load out and then maybe take it deer hunting next season.

My Marlin 1895 is scopes, with a Bushnell 2 to 7 power.

Any one out there have good results with this weight of bullet?

IME, the factory 300 gr. load is just fine for groundhogs. No need to go whole hog with some fancy-shmancy reloads! Most folks over estimate their hardiness. Heck, I've killed them with .22 rimfires!
Sincerely,

Hobie

Never seen a ground hog in this country. I have used em on prairie dogs though. They are tougher than ya think, gotta use heat treated heavy cast bullets ya know.

Varmints are en excellent way to practice for large game. Field expedient positions, unknown ranges, low power scopes, fun, fun, fun....
