I've been meaning to post this for a little bit. Here goes.
This is a picture of my Dad's black bear mount that he got back last month. He shot the bear in Maine last October over hounds. He said it was just like the coon hunting he did years ago except on a giant scale. The dogs had radio collars and they followed them in trucks on logging roads until they treed. Then they hiked in after them. He said the shooting was sort of anti-climatic. The real excitement was watching the dogs and hurrying after them when they treed.
One shot from a Marlin 1895 .45-70 using Remington 405 gr factory loads. He said the bear came down stone dead and landed with a thud. The bear was coming down the tree head first and he was shooting up at it. The bullet took the bear in the front of his chest to one side and ranged completely through exiting by the opposite hip.
The guide ran up to to the bear and shot it in the head with a .44 mag revolver as soon as it hit the ground. My dad said the bear was dead, but that seemed to be the guides policy. Seems the guide had some big scars on one leg from a bear that didn't come down dead years back. Same for his hounds. One had staples that were just removed from the previous hunt. Apparently black bears can get pretty mean if provoked by dogs or shooting them.

We have a bunch of bears here in florida...
But no bear season
Kind of like New Jersey, huh? We in Tn have lots of bears in the eastern part of the state, in the mountains. We've actually had two people killed by black bears in the last 2 yrs here. There's a park in the Smokies, Cades Cove, where simply driving through the park, you have a decent chance of spotting a bear. I am actually 1 for 2. And seeing 3 bears that time!

Cades Cove is beautiful. Just a piece of heaven.
