Which short-action cartridge best equates to the .270 Win?

Post by Triggernosis »

7mm-08, perhaps?
Thinking of getting a BLR in a short-action chambering and would like to be able to stretch it out on occasion to 300 yards like I do my .270 - what chambering would be best for me?

20" barrel with a 7-08 with a 120 or 130 gr bullet will give you 2800 - 2900 fps aacording ot my loading records depending on the load which should be adequate for what you want. I used 47.0 gr of H380 to get those velocities.

I don't know how it stacks up against the .270 but the 7mm-08 is the most under utilized cartrige out there. I plain love it!. Great ballistics, not much more recoil than a .243, short action, etc etc. On the flip side I can't stand the .270. They're like a-holes, everyone has one. In reality, the only '06 based caliber I like is the 25-06, plain hammers things out farther than I have a right to be shooting. The one advantage the .270 has is that they can be found everywhere and usually cheap. But IMO, short actions are the only way to go.

When and if I can afford a BLR, it will either be a 22-250 or a 7mm-08.

300 yds isn't that big of a deal. Most any of the standard short action cartridges will get that done. 7mm08 would definetly be a good choice, but there's no flies in the ointment of a 308 either. 243 and 257 Roberts will both cleanly take out game animals at 300 with one shot as well.
I've found that with the 243 and 308 in the blr neither cartridge is hampered by the 20 inch barrel, and I can't help but think the 708 would deliver top velocities as well.

I'm aware of the "hate anything new syndrome" but why not just go for the BLR in 270 WSM?

270WSM to beat 270, 7mm-08 is a good cartridge, 260 Rem also. As said, 308 would be a great one also.

The 7mm-08 will give you the same velocity for the same bullet weight as a 270 Win in the same barrel length. The diameter of the bullet varies by only .07. I think you answered your own question right in the first place.

260 Remington or 6.5 CreedMore. Same velocity as the 7-08 with a 140 grain bullet(basically). However the 140 grain 6.5mm bullet has a higher BC than the 7mm 140 grain bullet, so it will have better down range energy and flatter trajectory.

Take a good long look at the 6.5 CreedMore. Hornady is loading a good match grade load with their 140 and 120 grain bullets for about $24 bucks a box. That is hard to beat. And the bullets are great hunting bullets.

The 270 WSM, and the 7mm WSM are great cartridges. However the ammo prices are just ridiculous. Tom.

The only problem with those are available hunting bullet loads. My vote is for the 7-08 as well. I passed up on a fine used BLR in 7-08 a couple years back, and now regret it. It would solve a lot of issues for this non lead hunting issue here in CA, and still have a levergun.

++1 7mm-08. Great cartridge...and as others have suggested, virtually same ballistics out to 300. This coming from a tried n true .270 fan. The others mentioned are fine cartridges as well, but.availability and proven reliability of the classic 7mm-08 makes it the winner here, IMO. If there's ever been a "what's not to like" cartridge, this is it. My next rifle (to augment my .270 :-)) .

How is the non-lead hunting thing in Cali working? What kind of bullets are being used?

AND THE BEST PART ABOUT THE 7MM-O8 IS WHEN YOU SHOOT IT OUT, LIKE I DID MY M788, YOU CAN HAVE IT REBORED TO THE GREATEST WILDCAT I EVER INVENTED, THE 7.62-08. THIS ONE IS SOOOOOO GOOD I MAY HAVE TO COPYRIGHT THE NAME AND DESIGN.

:D As much of a fan of the .308 Winchester I am.....I'll say 7mm-08 Remington gets the nod. Ammo is readily available and it's kind to old shoulders. Thanks, Tom

The 284 winchester in a BLR , the 284 can be handloaded to just about 7 mag velocity , only trouble is finding a blr in 284 without taking out a 2nd mortgage

The problem at 300 yards is not whether the cartridge is a .260, 7-08, .284 or .308. If your rifle is properly sighted, it simply comes down to the operator and his ability. The cartridges will all do their job.

Azzhandler, be careful there. The .284 is a short twin to the .280 Remington and no more. Its definitely not a short 7mag.

Terry, I see that great minds think alike. Since I was just working on the copyright filings, I guess we could save all the legal wranglings and just co-apply.

Sounds like a good round. You may even be able to convince the military to adopt it!

Depends on what you are hunting and where. Some states limit elk hunting to .30 caliber or larger. I would stick with the .308. Inside of .300 yards there is not enough difference between it and the 7-08 to master.
