What is your favorite Cartridge - lever gun
Didn't want to steal a thread and Griff got me laughing over there so here is the question: To keep it ON TOPIC, the question is: What is your favorite Lever Gun Cartridge? Its an easy question.
i'm thinking we have done this before. But I am suffering from CRS so humor me.
For me, its a choice between three:
.22lr
.357
45-70
I shoot more .22lr than any other caliber outside of .20 pellets
I have built my entire pistol/rifle arsenal around the .357.
But I have to say that the 45-70 is my favorite all time. 1886 and 1873 Trapdoor fill the bill for me.

22 rimfire, but 32-20 is my favorite centerfire.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

My favorites are:

Re: What is your favorite Cartridge - lever gun
I'm thinking about it but I have it narrowed down to about 12 if my count is right.
Re: What is your favorite Cartridge - lever gun
Aside from the .22 LR... hmmmm, this might take some thought, let me get back to you...
Now let's see... .218 Bee, .25-35, .30-30 (.30 WCF), .30-40, .308 Win, .32-20 (.32 WCF), .357 Mag, .35 Rem, .38-55, .44 Mag, .45 Colt, .45-70, .45-75 WCF... hmmmmmmmm....
I suppose that it would be the .357 Mag as the most versatile and useful here in VA. If it is which I like shooting most, well that's just impossible to answer.

Since I own 3 of them I'd have to say 38-40...but the 40-82 is a real world performer...of course I'm really attached to my .405...dang...

Re: What is your favorite Cartridge - lever gun
After years of playing with a variety of levergun cartridges making up my short list of favorite cartridges, the finalists are:
32-20
30-30
38-55
45-60
45-70
Believe me, a lot of shooting, reading, nostalgia and who knows what all else has gone into reducing my arsenal to just those 5 cartridges, so it would be almost impossible to take that list of all-time favorites and narrow it down to just one. However, if several fellows (and it would take several) took me out behind the barn to try and beat just one absolute, all time favorite cartridge out of me, I might yell out ....
'the 32-20 and the 38-55'.
And if it got so bad that I finally had to crack and holler out just one, then I suppose (and I do this under terrible protest) that I'd have to holler ...
'the 38-55'!!
There, you have it.

OK, my favorite 30 leverguns are in .30-30.
.45 Colt is a close second, and 3rd place is .45-70. But, hey... I'll swap 'em up if the ocassion calls for it!

Ha!
If it were just ONE, I think it would be .444 Marlin (the 'Ha' is because of the post above...)
If it were two, I'd pick .32-20 and .444 Marlin.
If it were three, I'd pick .22 LR, .44 Mag, and .444 Marlin.
If it were four...

1 Marlin 336, 11 post-64s, 18 pre-64s. 1 Trapper, 18 carbines, 8 rifles and 3 to be determined. 24 complete; 6 are in process of being built, 3 of which have all their parts (except wood for two), 3 need barrels, (so maybe they don't count cause I could always change their caliber). NOT! They'll be .30-30s unless I happen to run across something that really trips my boat. Although, my fantasy rifle would be a TD with a .25-35, .30-30, .32-40 and .38-55 barrels... Most are stored and a few are off-site. There's also a .38-55 mdl 94 that my Dad still has that was left to me from my uncle... but my Dad likes it! In the front safe are only the Trapper, a Mdl 64A, a couple of carbines (a '61, '70 & '79), my custom bull-barreled mdl 94 and the project receivers.KirkD wrote:Are you pulling our legs here, Griff? Same old boring me, but I love my Big Bore 94 in 356 Win. Recoil is not punishing, it's scary accurate, totes like any 94 Win.(like a dream) yet is a little different with the 356 Win. cartridge and beefed up reciever walls. I like something a little different, though can't get away from the 94 Win. as it was my first love.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
Re: What is your favorite Cartridge - lever gun
I'm like c.cash, I really like my 356. I'm starting to like the 300 savage also. My first rifle was a 300 but I didn't reload then 165 gr bullets seem to really work well so far with rl15. It all depends on what rifle I have in my hand at the time I guess. I try and treat them equally don't want ant jealous safe queens. 22LR, 30wcf 356 win or 300 sav.

Re: What is your favorite Cartridge - lever gun
Well, I don't know if it counts but the 454 Casull in my Puma is probably the perfect lever gun cartridge. Very small, very powerful but can also be loaded down for plinking.
I'm also a big fan of the 358 Win. for the same reasons. If its gotta be one caliber, then versatality is key.
While I don't own one, I really like the 405 Win and 45-70.

Really, it's kind of a CF toss-up between the .45-70 and .45 Colt, but I think the .45-70 gets the nod, when things get REAL.

Re: What is your favorite Cartridge - lever gun
Well I shoot .357 the most, it is just the thing for cast bullets. But I think I'm warming up to the 30-30. If it came down to one right now I'd pick the 30-30, because I'd rather hunt than do all this target shooting. Not that I've had a chance to hunt much lately.
And 30-30 is a real levergun cartridge, not a pistol round. Nice ballistics within reason.
Also I'm sort of against using a huge bullet to do a job when a smaller one will suffice.
