ATV
Well,
I bit the bullet, bought a Suzuki ATV to haul wood, drag logs, pull oak brush, etc. It looks like a handy device, should get some good work out of it.

Re: ATV
Will you use it to haul in your deer? I have been thinking about your photo foray and the thought came to me about a good desert bred cowpony. He would be better than two more pair of eyes. They can sure let you know when a cat or something is around, just watch one and they can tell you alot.

Re: ATV
Just don't use it to go in at 4 a.m. on property you don't own to get set up for poaching deer. THAT's what locals seem to use them for.

Re: ATV
Love ATV's or as my wife calls them her "Petrol Pony".
She much prefers 4 wheels and refused to ride her 2 wheel Ag. Bike anymore.
Thrown my leg over Suzuki's, Yamaha, Polaris, Kawasaki, Arctic Cat and our own Honda's.
Down under, the number one ATV is Honda. They have the best dealer support in Australia and outsell all other brands combined. Our few have proven bulletproof.
They are the choice for our base in Antarctica!
I'll certainly admit the Polaris is very powerfull and ride quality is superb, but my friends who own them always end up doing repairs out bush or towing back to camp!
The Australian Defence Force uses 4x4 and 4x6 Polaris ATV's.
We rode Arctic Cats in the USA and I believe they combine the build quality of the Honda's and the comfort of the Polaris. If I was to buy another - Arctic Cat would be my choice.
A lot of cheap Chines bikes have been sold and most are junk. Fun for weekenders and kids but not worth wasting money on.
Side by Side such as the Kawasaki Mule and the Polaris Ranger are rarely seen here, though the local councils use John Deere Gators quite a bit.
Only rolled my quad bike once - busted tendons in fingers of my right hand.
Ended up in a ditch with the quad's wheel on my face!
Be carefull out there and use a helmet. I use a bicycle helmet as its' lighter and allows me to shoot while wearing it.
Kirby.

Re: ATV
I'm sorry, ATVs fall in the same category as boats... the best ones belong to your friend. No matter how much you spend on his gas, it's a drop in the bucket compared to his cost of maintenance!

Re: ATV
Mescy, Which one did you get?Model/size? If you are new to them be very careful for a while until you get used to them.I have found that a winch on one and even a small chainsaw are valueable things to have mounted on your machine deep in the woods.(of couse a gun too)Just dont want to flip it on you way out somewhere, with you all broken up by yourself and cant get it off you. Good Luck Pal!
P.S. I have found that the "PINK" Honda Tire Sealant is by far the best stuff to load your tires with.Much better than that Green Slime stuff. To me this is a must for riding way out in the boonies.(No Flats)Also for real bad stuff--snow/ice/etc.4 ATV tire ice chains are invalueable.Without them, they can easily on the real steep slippery stuff start sleding.Even with theones with the best engine braking. My Yamaha Grizzly 700 will, but on normal stuff going down real steep banks the engine braking holds the machine, but on ice/snow different deal! Loaded tires and ice Chains rule for where at least I live/play!

Suzuki A-400,
Thanks, will do.
Maybe Griff was right, I can see a large expenditure for accessories.

If it's any consolation, I'm looking at a 40 year old boat, an aquatic version of the '32 highboy hotrod! Talk about expensive?mescalero1 wrote:Suzuki A-400,

Re: ATV
I am 68 years old. Ex motorcyclist, pilot etc. I have owned many motorcyles, several airplanes, (still own one). Our quad, a bombardier 650 traxtor, for the money, is the most fun you can have! I never rode another so I am not going to tell you it is the best, although it just might be. We bought it new right after we moved here in quad country four years ago. It is a two seater, and I belive the first legal one. Just yesterday another couple and us did 40+ miles on part of the piute trail system east of beaver utah. Some of it was at 11,000 feet. Whats it cost to keep a horse? There is no other vehicle that two people can ride and get into the wilderness far back in. Yes, some trail bikes, but you have to be in good shape. We are old and fat. We went on trails I would hate to try hikeing on even if I was in good shape. Besides transporting the atv`s to the area, I used between 2 to 3 gallons of gas for the day. While I have owned the quad for 4 years about a year and half of it, I have been laid up with ailments. Even so, we have close to 1,400 + miles on it. At a average of 25 miles a outing on a average day trip, thats a lot of fun and I havent had any mechanical bills to date. I also have a winch and a snowplow for our driveway. We love to explore, and we just may live in the best place here in southern utah, to use the quad.
