One last Winchester 94 sight question...
The plain bead on the Winchester 94 is tough to use even with a peep style rear sight. What are my options as a replacement? Or will "sight paint" make a big difference? Thanks in advance, NRA
If it's too big, the 3/32 ones are available. I like a flat faced bead, if I'm using a bead. Some folks prefer post, I like both - you can thin and square the factory one some. I think XS offers dovetail posts. Marbles used to offer nice Sourdough posts with a brass front insert. I have not been able to find those in heights I needed.
Are you doing target work and holding 6 o'clock?
Is your aperture the proper size for you to see your front sight clearly? ( It's sort of like focusing the reticle of a scope. Clarity of the target is less important than the clarity of the front sight )
Sight paint works for me in low light with a dark target. I use nail polish and glow in the dark powder www.readysetglo.com
I use the silhouette of the front sight rather than the light reflecting off the sight.

I prefer a post or sourdough which you can get from Brownells. However, I often don't replace sights just to do so. I'm a firm believer in "if it works don't fix it".

Re: One last Winchester 94 sight question...
If I'm using the factory open iron sights I leave the bead front sight on if it's the correct height. I can shoot with that combo, I just don't prefer it.nralover wrote:The plain bead on the Winchester 94 is tough to use even with a peep style rear sight. What are my options as a replacement? However~
If I install an aperture type sight of any kind I replace the front bead sight with a post or a sourdough. I started shooting with British Enfields and they have very thin post front sights. Since I got used to them I can't shoot with a peep sight and bead at all.

[are they not the same as a "Beech" front sight?]
Nosiree - Sourdough's are not the same as a Beech.
The Beech's claim to fame, is that it's a hooded bead on a post that flips down to expose a plain old post - that's why they're often referred to as "combination" sights.

The Sourdough refers to the angular face of a square post, most often (but not always) inlayed with brass or Ivory.
