XS sights on a 92???

Post by Saz »

First, hello to all. I am new to the site and glad to be here. I have been reading for a while but finally became a member. Great forum and LOTS of knowledge here, I love it!

Here is my question. I just bought a puma/LSI 92 in 454 & 16"barrel which will be used primarily as a camp gun, and occasionally hunting. I want to run a peep sight on it and was about to order a williams 5D and just use an aperture while at the range, and take it out and use it like a ghost ring for quick acquisition most of the time. I have recently been made aware that XS makes a sight for the 92's and I love how tough those sights are, but I am a little concerned about the mounting. It seems that you have to drill and tap down into the sides of the reciever from the top to attach the sight. The only picture of the installation I have seen had the sight in front of the locking lug mortises, and I am wondering if that would make the reciever prone to stretching or cracking with 4 vertical holes in front of the lugs especially with the 454 casull. Can you mount the sight towards the rear of the reciever, or am I concerned about nothing?

Welcome to the fire, Saz !

There are a few ways to peep a Rossi 92, some hard, some EZ, and some even easier.

The side of the receiver can be D/T'd (2 holes) for any side-mounted peep for a Winchester 94 - and the issue height front sight will zero w/o mods.

The top-mount XS can be used, not w/4 holes as you mention, but 2 ( I wouldn't use one due to height, but YMMV) - due to it's higher mounting height, above the barrel sights line-of-sight, a much higher front sight will be needed to achieve zero. (the rifle will shoot too high with the peep all the way down, with a issue height front sight)

IF your rifle has a bolt top saftey, the safety can either be modified for a Skinner Lo-Pro Peep (below), or replaced with fellow levergunner Nate "Kiowa" Jones' bolt peep.
Windage is easily adjusted via the issue front sight - mine took less then 1/16" movement.
Elevation adjustment was also minimal.

A Williams FP or 5D 94AE top-mount peep meant for a Winchester 94 side eject rifle (also below) can also be mounted like the XS (2 holes) - but since it's sighting bar rests behing the mount base, it's low enough that the issue height front sight will zero.

The XS can be mounted to the rear of the 92.

And it also adds support to the receiver there by the locking bolts. But, as you can see the safety will need to be removed.
The safety on this gun has been removed and a tight fitting plug installed, ground flush and polished to match the bolt.

HAHA!!! I would love to, but I am currently deployed to Afghanistan and we are all on a shared server, so no uploading or downloading is allowed or else there would be almost NO bandwidth left for anyone. I will try to post a few when I am home on R&R, I PROMISE!!!!!!
