You can ask around here:

There may be other sections of Knife Forums that can answer as well, but Bernard Levine knows more about knives than almost all the rest of us combined.

I believe it falls into what knife folks call a "D-Guard" knife or bowie - although they're not often seen with the guard cast integrally with the pommel, of aluminum.

It looks like an amateur home made version of what is referred to as a "Trench Knife". These were designed and issued during WWI for trench fighting where it was too confined to use a rifle with bayonet whether offensively or defensively.
If it were a commercially made knife there would be some markings on it that would identify the maker. SInce you don't mention any I assume there are none, which indicates it is home made as distinguished from professionally "hand made".

That to me looks like an Australian style trench/fighting knife. I am away from my books right now so I can not give to much in the ways of names. This style was very common in the world wars and many were carried by our brave alies in Viet Nam.

Re: Its a knife what have I got
Some of the most durable and useful knives I've owned over the years have been those no-label 'junk' ones - they're also the ones I USE the most, since I didn't spend a bunch on them.
My son's "Rambo Survival Kinfe" has a funny name, but has proven very useful and durable. $25 new.

It's definitely a trench knife. I can't remember the name of a maker that made aluminum handled knives during WWI or II. You might be surprised your making kindling with a spendy knife. Interested in knowing what you've got.

I think I have seen these before, they were Mexican made hunting knives.....that would be my guess.

I agree with the probability of Mexican origin. That knife looks pretty typical of knives sold in the bordertowns of Mexico. I recall seeing lots of those type for sale in Nuevo Laredo, usually with highly tooled leather scabbards. My brothers brought home similar blades of letter-opener size. Nicely etched blades with really nice leather. Handles were aluminum with bone inserts.

It is indeed a Mexican knife. I had several of them when I was a kid.
