what is the difference:
-between a semi-jacketed hollow point and a standard JHP?
Does one expand faster then the other?
I have 200 Remington semi-JHPs in the 158gr variety.
Remington claims they stay together longer for a balance of penetration and expansion.
Any thoughts?
I feel stupid asking again, but would these Remingtons be O.K. for hogs?
Just curious.

I guess it depends on the MFG/your upbringing.
Kind of like ordering an Orange Coke vs an Orange Pop or an Orange Soda etc.
To my mind a JHP has no exposed lead above the jacket, but a SJHP has exposed lead above the jacket.
A Gold Dot is a JHP. The Federal C357G is a SJHP, though they call it a JHP.
Confusing, ain't it?

I don't have any fancy pictures like O.I., but when I first heard the term "Semi Jacketed Hollow Points" it was in reference to the scalloped jacketed hollow point Remington bullets.
Prior to that all the bullets were either reffered to as "Half Jackets" or "Jacketed Hollow Points".
I also believe the term "Semi Jacketed Hollow Points" was a Remington name game to make their bullets sound more attractive to purchasers. After all, they are simply jacketed hollow points with a scalloped jacket.
Now I will stand corrected if I am wrong, but this is what I remember from all the loading and buying I've done in the past.

Yes. Yes it is confusing.
I found out the Remington's were nicknamed "rosebuds" due to the petal-like appearance of the copper jacket as it nears the ogive, and it is designed to expand rapidly and end up looking like a flower. A deadly flower, but too soft for hogs.
Ah well, back to the cast bullet search.
I'm leaning towards 170gr SWCs over 17gr of Lilgun.
Anyone got any?

No, but Mike has some nice hard cast over at Cast performance... and if he has them in stock, I'm sure he needs the cash infusion about now...

I have been looking at those, but they don't list a 170gr bullet.
In addition to that, they are more expensive than non-cast bullets!
I know they are superior to most hard cast bullets, but dang... I'll just get some 170gr FMJs for that price and not have to worry about using a GC bullet.
What about Tru-cast bullets? they're sure cheap, but I wonder if the quality is there.

Sounds like you need to get a mould...
I still have a few 180s that Steveb cast up that I can send your way if you are interested.
They whallop pretty good in front of 16gr LilGun...
Do you have checks & a sizer?

Black River Bullets shows a 170gr Keith bullet. http://www.blackriverbullet.com/
I've bought and used his bullets, they are pretty darn good.

Generally speaking a soft point will not expand as fast as a hollow point. For hunting where you generally want in and out holes you want better penetration.
For varmints of all kinds a hollow point would be best so that you can dump as much energy into the target as possible.

OK, I placed an order with Black River for 170gr SWCs.
Now I guess all I have to do is wait to be asked to pay.
And yes, I would like to get into casting, but that's a little bit if money up front. I'd like to try cast bullets first, see if I like them, and maybe when the bills get caught up I can start casting!
Thanks for all the info guys!
OI, I'd like to try those bullets, I'll PM an address. Thanks!
Edit: I don't have checks or a sizer...
Do Black River bullets also need the same?
Hrmph.
