Questions about a new Puma

Post by Steve Redgwell »

I recently bought a Puma, new in the box, in 44 Magnum. I have been reading the various entries about the Puma and would like to determine its age, when they added the top safety, etc.

It's a Rossi, serial no. M153xxx. The interesting thing (for me at least) is the fact that mine does not have the top safety that many people talked about.

I've tried a search for Puma timelines but did not find what I was after. Specifically, is there a manufacturing history for these Pumas? Details about changes to the line over a period of time? Safeties, bores, wood, etc.

I'll be slugging the barrel and will order some different weight bullets shortly thereafter. I would like to find out some more information about what I have.

A five minute call to LSI will answer the first question. That's what I did with mine.

Sounds like you found a really desireable gun. Don't let any of these fellers talk you out of it...

NKJ and some others are well versed on the 'Rossi' history, so they'll no doubt chime in soon.

I have several Rossi Puma's of different vintages (all but one with the 'safety') and they are all nice guns. A few cosmetic imperfections, but after a season in the field, my 'dings' mask the factory ones easily...

Hi and thanks for the replies. I thought that I would post some pix. No doubt that everyone has seen these things over and over. I was impressed with the wood and the fit. (And not having the safety too!)

That gun has WAY better wood and fit than most of my newer ones.

Steve,

Who is the importer of your new rifle? How is your front sight mounted?

Yes, the wood is nicer than what I expected.

The front sight is dovetailed into the barrel. I bought it from Epps Sporting Goods in Orillia, ON.

Nice looking rifle. My Puma has a little bit of wear on it, but I care most about the fact that it is as reliable as any firearm that I have ever fired. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine.

It looks like it will be around for a while. It carries nicely which is the big thing for me.

Does anyone know the year that the top safety appeared?
