Hornady 250gr XTP and 2400 for 45colt Win 94
I just got in a new batch of 250gr XTP HPs and looking for some direction as to what loads you guys have used with Alliant 2400.
The hodgdon website lists some Ruger and Contender loads only for the 45colt but Alliant doesn't, only Colt SAA type loads.
These are going to be shot from my Win94 Legacy w/ 24" barrel

In Paco's article, "The .45 Colt in Lever-Action Rifles", he says he likes the 260gr/Keith cast under 22grs 2400 for well over 32000 cup. giving over 1800fps in rifles, & him saying 35,000cup is max practicle in '94s, & the bhn of a 250XTP is near 100 as opposed to around 20 for a hardcast, My guess would be 19-20grs for a SAFE load in a '94. Just my 2 cents, jd45

i just started using 2400 again recently after many years for the 45 colt. i restarted with 17.5 grains behind a 250 grain bullet which is mild. im certain you can start from there and doctor them up as the gun will handle it. with the old 2400 i loaded much heavier but i would think that 17.5 grains would be a good place to start.

If you look @ Alliant's on-line daata for Silhouette loads, you'll find loads listed for 44Mag with a 250 grain Sierra JFP. I might drop a couple of grains and work up from there. In a '92 or '94 Winchester action I wouldn't fear experimenting some.

meanc,
How about checking the Hornady manuals for data? After all, they made the bullets.
Hornady 5TH Edition: (The latest one I have)
45 Colt, Ruger and T/C Only;
250gr HP-XTP
2400; Starting load 19.7 @ 1150 / Max load 20.8 @ 1250
AA 5744; Starting load 20.7 @ 1150 / Max Load 22.4 @ 1250
H 4227; Starting load 20.5 @ 1150 / Max Load 25.7 @ 1400
IMR 4227; Starting Load 20.2 @ 1150 / Max Load 24.2 @ 1300
Test gun was a T/C Contender with a 10" barrel.
I've used the max IMR 4227 load and it's a thumper.
Personally I liked the IMR 4227 load although I don't have any problems with the 2400 loads. For the record, Hornady used ALLIANT 2400 in their tests, not Hercules.

Thanks for the responses.
I loaded up 50 with 20gr of 2400 last night, I don't know what the velocity wil be as I didn't bring my chrony, but I'll let you know what the accuracy is like.
J Miller,
Don't have a Hornady manual, as I've just been using HardCast in the 45colt and using the load data given to me by Oregon Trail.
Thanks for the info though.
BTW, did it by any chance list the pressure levels associated with these loads? I'm pretty certain my Ruger Blackhawk and Win 94 won't have any problems, but would like to compare it to H110 loads.
Happy New Year Everyone, I'm going shooting

MeanC,
There is no specific mention of pressure. Here is what it says in the text:

JoePage 751, Hornady 5TH Edition, Copyrite 2000;
The following data is to be used only in the T/C or the Ruger Blackhawk. While the pressures of the loading data in the previous section are safe and within limits appropriate to earlier 45 Colt revolvers or their replicas, the data below absolutely should not be used in these firearms. These loads were developed in and intended for Ruger And Thompson / Center handguns. It should prove safe when used in the Marlin 1894S or the Winchester Model 94 rifles produced in 45 Colt, but always start load development low and work up.
