Actually, the mangy coyote can be the friend of the hunter - because it soon dies!
When hunting pronghorns near Clayton, NM this August, the ranch foreman told us that there were very few coyotes now because of a recent outbreak of the mange. This reduction in predators and the timely rains caused a very successful fawn crop this year and last, so next year there should be lots of large pronghorns in that part of NM.
