22 LR Non lead bullets soon

Post by JohndeFresno »

I didn't mark this as "OT" because there are quite a few .22 Levergun aficianados here -

I just read on the Winchester site that they will be offering:
Super-X .22 Rimfire Line (Tin Core)
Winchester® Ammunition will offer three lightning-fast, lead-free rimfire bullets, chambered for both .22 Win. Mag and .22 Long Rifle (LR) cartridges, beginning in 2009.
28 grain JHP .22 Win. Mag
30 grain THP (Tin Hollow Point), .22 LR
30 grain TRN (Tin Round Nose), .22 LR

Good move, Winchester!

Yep and everyone of them is a light weight bullet. Going lighter is a sure way to increase velocity but degrade terminal performance. Not a step in the right directtion, IMHO.

I don't think the idea is to make a better bullet. The idea is to make something that can be used in lead free zones.

I thought these were already out!

We had a thread with a picture of a CA ground squirrel killed with one.

Probably a good marketing move for them, but I think it is a shame they have to do it, and probably not a good thing for all of us in the long (or maybe short) term.

The .22 Mags are out but I haven't seen the .22LRs offered by anyone yet.

at this point I REALLY dont care what they make the bullets out of. let's just get some in stock so we dont have to buy ahead.

I feel like a UNICEF kid waiting in the milk line ....checking a Walmart 3 or 4 times a week to see if a brick of 22 bulk has shown up..........

Try a different Wal Mart. The one closest to me has nada, zip. One down the road in yuppie town has a full stock of everything. Who'd have thought it?

Dicks had .223 bulk paks of 200 rds for $119.

Gander Mtn. was $169 for the same thing a week later.

Wallyworld has the 550 count Federals for $14 in Indiana.
Boxer-primed .223's were going for around $400/1,000 locally at the 'deep-discount' warehouse type gun store. Steel-case Berdan's were about $100 less. I've got about 400-500 rounds on hand and didn't figure there was any reason to spend that kind of money, but I know some folks want to have a bigger supply if they shoot alot or that is their 'main' caliber.
