Shotgun Fishing

JONESBORO (KAIT) For two Region Eight fisherman, a day on Craighead lake turned out to be a real "bang."

We have all seen the comedies where the fishermen have caught an old boot or a toilet seat or something along those lines.

And at first Devin Sullivan thought he was having turtle soup for supper.

"I thought it was a turtle at first but I reeled it in , looked at it and thought, that's a stick, that's not a turtle . I looked at it a little closer and it's a shotgun."

Devin and his stepfather Steve were fishing near pavilion 4. Devin said he cast out about a hundred feet. And reeled in a Remington 870 shotgun.

After that they did the responsible thing.

Sullivan, "Then we just put it in the truck, took it home and called the police."

I asked detective sergeant Todd Nelson, "So when you find a weapon in a lake what steps do the police take when you take it in to you?"

Todd, "We're gonna take precautions to preserve evidence and render the gun safe."

The serial number is visible on the weapon. It also is camouflaged with a carrying strap.

Todd, "We will try to check the serial number to see if it has been reported stolen. And then look at any outstanding crimes we have had that maybe that particular type gun was used."

Devin was thinking more in CSI kind of train, "Maybe somebody got killed with it and somebody was trying to ditch the evidence."

Sergeant Todd was quick to assure me that "as far as I know we don't have any active investigations involving a shotgun."

Todd says shotguns are hard to link to a crime scene unless a shell matches up. The gun will eventually be sent to the state crime lab.

But the question of the day was.

Todd, "Why somebody would throw a shotgun into Craighead lake. I don't know."

Devin, "Maybe somebody was out in a boat riding around and maybe it fell out."

Todd, "Somebody that's mad at a spouse about hunting too much."

If you have lost a shotgun in Craighead Forest Lake, you can go to the Jonesboro Police department.

I am sure they would like to hear the story.

Why the frig are they gonna render the shotgun safe? What use it will be after that happens??? To borrow Mescalero's Uncles line, what kind of International Stupid line have we crossed to arrive where we are? I wanna live in a place where the cop, after making sure it's not stolen or lost, slaps you on the back and says "it must be your lucky day!"

Yeah I got that comment too. I'm hoping he meant by "rendering it safe" that he was gonna make sure it was unloaded. ( Which if had found it, I would have already done. )

Why bother turning it in to the police? That's usually a one way event. Just clean it up and shoot the darned thing, unless it was in the lake for too long. The fact that it had a sling and was camoed tells me that some poor hunter lost the gun while duck hunting. Maybe rough weather caused the gun to fall overboard.

As if throwing a shotgun into the lake would do anything evidence wise.

I like the way you think Mike.

If nothing else, clean the shotgun up, take it to a gun store and trade it for ammo or reloading components, etc.

Anyone who hasn't seen "Second-hand Lions" really should rent it or buy it (it is sometimes in the cheapie bin, since it's an old movie). Duvall at his finest. If you've seen the movie, you know why I posted it on this thread...

I'd be willing to bet the shotgun was indeed lost by a duck hunter. Finders Keepers does not apply to everything. I would sure appreciate getting it back if it were mine. Turning it in is the honest thing to do, so that the rightful owner at least has a chance to reclaim his property. I guess it depends on where you are as to how law enforcement handles the situation.

A few years back my brother-in-law and I were the last hunters back to the boat launch at the end of the day at a local lake. Joe spotted a shotgun leaning against the fence, so we took it to the nearest sheriff's office. After 90 days with no one claiming it the sheriff called Joe and said come pick it up, it's yours!

It was just a cheapie Spanish over-under, but Joe got it for the price of a California legal transfer, $35.00. :D

Fished more than one out of the Chesapeake bay with a set of Oyster tongs.
That were dropped when getting in and out of off shore blinds.
Most were from numb hands.

Have fun

Sad thing is that being an 870, all you would have to do is dry it, oit it, and it would probably shoot just fine

I just watched that movie. It's no more than 3 years old, I think. "You go for ammo. I'll keep 'em covered." A very good movie!

There is no hunting allowed on Craghead Lake. Here is a link to information on the lake.

I missed the date. Thanks. I watched the DVD and the deleted scenes; there was a scene cut out where the kid came upon Michael Caine's character filling out cards from lots of different places, asking for salesmen to call. I wondered why they were showing up.
