Case for the short levergun complete
Finally finished the box for the short rifle.
3/16" oak ply inlaid in a frame cut from 1X3 (nominal) poplar, routed to fit. Brass hardware, leather bumper straps attached with copper tacks. The corners are glued and dowelled. I highly recommend a 90deg. clamp for this operation. The ply top and bottom are glued and screwed with brass screws.
Handles slotted to lay flat when not in use.
interior padding cut from dense foam mat designed for work station floor mat and a couple pieces of thin styrofoam house wrap where the thick parts of the wood are, glued with contact cement and covered in fabric.
The box is 36" long, 7.5 wide, 2.5" thick, to accomodate the 16.25" marlin.
The project didn't cost a whole lot, and could have been done for less if steel hardware was used.

Sometimes I wonder if it is worthwhile gnawing through the leather straps to get up in the morning..................

Really nice case. I've got to try my hand at making one of those. I think they're neat.

Very nice, has that "old west" charm! I think of doing something like that, them immediately realize the talent doesn't co-exist w/the desire!

Re: Case for the short levergun complete
Nope, first one. I have built stuff from boats to radio-controlled airplanes to a bit of half fast cabinetry, but this is the first rifle case. Puzzling out how I wanted it, then accumulating the "stuff" required in the absense of a 'real" hardware store was a challenge. I just wandered Lowes and homey depot until I found stuff that would work..... Cutting the ply with just a circular saw instead of a table saw was a treat (clamps and a 4ft ruler), but it all came together.Andrew wrote:Very nice. It looks like you've done this before, maybe?

No stain, just satin urethane over the natural wood. Choose wood for colorrevolverjunkie wrote:absolutley A#1 beautiful and i love the marlin

The trick to cutting ply is a thin kerf carbide blade, cut from the back, and use a straight edge guide. Adjust so ya barely break through and that's all. No splinters.

Very nice! Do you make these for all of your rifles or just a few special ones?

Re: Case for the short levergun complete
This is the first one. I may make a couple more, one for my SXS shotgun, and one for the 24" marlin that WAS twin to this one until I got this one cut. Somebody said I should do one and donate it to our CAS club as a raffle item for our next big match. I might.O.S.O.K. wrote:Very nice!
