OT dumb reloading question.

Post by rjohns94 »

I asked this on the old forum and didn't get to see the answer so I will ask again. Santa brought me a melting pot so I can start making bullets. looking for 30-1 mix. I have lead and I have tin so I can make it but I was wondering what ratio does most wheel weights come out to?? Also What lube do you prefer on your big bullets. I will be making .50 and .54 cal bullets for my sharps and 255 grain Keith for my .44s. thanks

Go here for lots of good info about lead alloys:
http://www.lasc.us/CastBulletNotes.htm

Right in the middle of the page is a break down of various alloys.

As for lube I've been using mostly the old NRA beeswax alox mixture. Or what ever the caster puts on them.

I like the NRA formula or the RCBS Rifle lube best when I cook up my own.

Mike;

First off, keep the wheelweight for you .44s separate from your BP 30/1.

Most of the "good" stuff (tin and antimony) is greatly reduced in wheel weights now but there's still enough to cause leading in BPCR in a lot of cases. WW alloy is now down to probably 97/3/2.

Add about 2-3% Linotype to your wheelweights and quench from the mould and you should get bullets that are plenty hard for your 44.

NEVER render wheelweights in you casting pot. WAY too much trash stays in the pot and will give you problems in a hurry. Always melt and clean them in a separate pot, (I use a 5 qt cast iron pot on my turkey fryer burner), cast into clean ingots to go into your casting pot.

Mike -

I don't think there is any such thing as a "dumb" reloading or casting question. With the expertise here, every question asked helps tons of folks. I have been reloading since I was 16 (27 years ago) and learn something new all the time here!!! Your question on this thread was just another opportunity for me to pick up sage advice!!!

Thanks! :D
