OT - Scoped BP pistol

Post by deerwhacker444 »

I've got a friend who enjoys tinkering with absurdity on a regular basis. This is his latest creation. He fabbed up these mounts from Stainless. It all clamps on, no modification. Why..? I guess just because he can. Thought you folks might like to see it.

NICE, although STRANGE. Not sure if it is legal for Deer hunting in your area or not, but looks like a fun plinker. You might have him check out the 210 grn bullet from the link below. They are sized to .454

Your buddy should look into manufacturing those and selling them - I bet people would buy em! Seriously.

I agree with Doc and Lee. I'm glad he didn't permanently muck up that revolver. That said, I've seen another with a mount welded to the topstrap!

I saw what appeared to be a standard 1911 ".45" but upon retracting the slide, one exposed a nipple for a percussion cap, and the gun was actually a black powder "1911" - would fit right in with this one...

Some folks just like to have all the accessories possible for their weaponry, so I bet these would indeed sell!

40 Plus yrs ago I fought for ML and archery hunting seasons in Ca and Pa . When I see a inline ML rifle scoped and cross bows , I get a little upset . They are getting away from the spirit of the sport , and should only be aloud to hunt in the reg season . This what it is about .

Howdy, Mike here,

I made the scope mounts for the Remingoton 1858. I rarely use my Ruger Redhawk scope mounts, so I designed an octagon clamp that will grab the barrel and will let the Ruger scope mounts secure to the barrel clamp. The clamps are stainless steal to match the "period" 1983 revolver. The bottom clamp has two sides so that the ball seating arm can swing down. Each lower clamp piece has a shim because the barrel has a slight taper.

Why you may ask? I thought it would be interesting. The sights on the gun are misalligned with the bore but the accuracy seemes to be good, especially with 20gr of BP and cornmeal filler under a roundball. So I wanted to add a scope to see how good the gun really is. Haven't fired it yet cause the scope is dead.

Well welcome to the board Mike :D

As I posted above, I think you should market your invention. I really do think that there are people that would purchase these. I'd contact Dixie Gun Works and similar and see if they'd like to stock them in their catalog/web site.

TN Gun Runner - don't worry! They don't allow cap and ball revolvers for muzzle loader season anyway - yet :P

And you must really get your blood pressure up looking at the likes of the Mississippi regs - they now allow Single Shot "period" rifles of 38 caliber and larger during muzzle loading season. The H&R 45-70 break-action has become the new Mississippi muzzle loader as a consequence.

Thing is, even with relaxed regs like this and one deer per day limits, they don't see enough deer harvested every year for healthy herd control...

You shouldn't worry about this - you can hunt with your traditional equipment during a number of different seasons - why do you care if somebody else gets to use something more modern? Really - what's the deal? How does that hurt you or the sport or anything?

After all, consider that the bow hunters think you're ML hunting isn't sporting enough.... ;) And they're getting all upset over the new tech bows and such too.

It would be better if it had a laser sight, or at least a Bushnell HoloSight... 8)

I wonder how the scope finish would hold up after shooting it a few times.

Laser sight...hmmm...working on that.

The scope became discolored from the .44 mag gasses that escape out the top of the frame around the sight, so I guess a little is ok. I'll get some see-through lens covers.
