OT-Cream of Wheat

Post by perry owens »

I normally use COW as a filler when fireforming 0.348 Win brass into 11.15 x 57R but now I am back in England I find the stuff is not sold here. Does anyone know a substitute that won't ring the chamber?

Perry ...just a guess but I think this may have about the same consistancy as COW...

Pablum.. it's that nasty baby cereal... I dont know if you call it the same thing in the UK.

Maybe you could re-grind oatmeal or corn meal in a blender and get the same texture or something similar to raw Cream of Wheat.

I think COW works well because the grains are soft but coarse. I need to avoid anything fine ground that might form a plug. Even the coarse ground cornmeal in the " world foods" section of the supermarkets here seems to be too fine.Next time I am babysitting I will root around the baby foods. Tea leaves sounds a good idea Nath - next time the missus is out I'll grab a handfull of Earl Grey.

Freeze dried potato ... tiny flake size. If the flakes are too large, they could be reduced perhaps by rubbing between the palms. Not sure if instant mashed potatoes are available over yonder though. No shortage of them here in the southern US, I can assure you.

You might try polenta (Italians use it a lot) or couscous.

Now, what does the cream of wheat do? Just a case filler? I'm lost here. I never fire formed anything.

The C of W take the place of a bullet and when you shoot it , the pressure jump up over 15,000 psi and force the brass to form to the chamber it is shot in , it is actually 100% formed and that is closer then factory ammo or brass in a normal or standard cal gun . Hope that helps you . .

Alright. I'm hip with the fire forming but not the COW. Do you cook it first and let it dry some?

Hey, Perry. If you can't find an alternative. I don't know what kind of restrictions, if any, are on sending you some COW, but let me know and I'll send ya some. Sure isn't a shortage of the stuff here that I'm aware of.

You Englishmen and your derned tea!! LOL :x

Did you use Earl Grey or English Breakfast Blend? LOL

Try runing some oat meal through a blender and see if it gets fine enough to do the job. You might want to try pinhead or steel cut oats and toast it a bit before grinding, that might cut donwn on the tendency to clump.

FWIW, Earl Grey and Oolong Sou Chong are my favorite hot teas. But I use Louizianne for iced tea.

Some years back I was fire forming some /06 cases to make 338/06 cases. Small powder charge with a piece of kleenex stuffed on top of the power and filled the rest of the case with COW, and a wad of kleenex to keep it from falling out. Was shooting in my back yard and my Yuppie neb. called the law. Here comes 2 S/O units. Both of them knew me. Asked what I was doing cause the Yuppie had called.
Told them to tell her I was feeding the birds COW. They laughed and went and told her that, and her comment was OH THATS OK THEN.

I'm so glad someone has at last found a use for Earl Grey tea! Shooting it out of a gun is best thing for it.

Here in Tn we have bee's that bore a hole in wood the size of a marble . A 357 or 44 mag case filled with corn meal with make you the great white hunter of the insect world and won't damage the wood . It all so works on warps and mud dabbers . The hornets will chase you , so make sure you have a good escape plan .
