Puma 92 magazine problem

Post by Firestick »

After firing and patterning some reloads recently, I noticed the magazine tube on my 357 LSI Puma 92 had shifted forward about 1/2". Close investigation revealed that the magazine plug screw had popped out of the retention hole in the underside of the barrel. I loosened everything up and reinstalled the screw in its proper position. Went out today to try some more reloads (the first 2 loads were 2 of the same as on my last outing that I wanted to double check), and the same thing happened. I did not notice until the 11th shot, so I don't know if it happened on the 1st shot or the 11th shot.

The first load of 4 cartridges was the most accurate shots this gun has ever produced, 4 bullets through a 3 leaf glover no bigger than a dime at 25 yards. The next round of 4, strung out vertical in a 2" spread, so I am suspecting this was the culprit load. The 3rd group was not as good as the first, but it was close, but I only fired 3 times before I thought to check the magazine tube.

I am just wondering if anyone else has seen this before.

Not on my puma, but on my Win 94. Same effect on accuracy. I keep that gun pretty loose all the way around. If the screw does not fit the hole, or line up perfectly, it can be fixed, purple loctite and a little shaping of the screw or hole fixed it for me. On my 1886 EL, the hole in the barrel was too far back, it's now oval.

The worlds leading authority on Pumas is Nate Kiowa Jones at http://www.stevesgunz.com . Sending your gun to him for a workover will create the slickest gun you've ever held. At the very least, buy the DVD.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Ordered some new screws for the upper band and the tube plug from Steve's Gunz. I boogered the original set up with a cheap screwdriver.
Reassembled and used the blue lockite. Took the gun to the range to continue trying diffent reloads, and the gun stayed together. Some of the loadings where awful and sprayed bullets in a big group, but the little Rossi 92 held up.
Now that I had time to think about it, I believe one of 2 things happened to cause the original problem. First, either the screws had losened up over time, and I did not catch it, or 2nd, when I slugged my barrel the process shifted something loose.

Glad it's together for you. Thinks of load development as a search for Zen.

Once the retaining screw jumps out of its divet, it will jump easier each time. Heavy loads with fast powder is the cause. If you try out a load, don't do it with a full magazine. I eventually had to pin through the front carrier. Problem solved. Lost 2 rounds of capacity in .45. The .454 has the tube THREADED into the reciever. Recoil can also cause the Gate to slip OUTSIDE the receiver!! Happened to a slicked up Rossi 92 I have that loaded really smoothe. Ace

If you get a load that is wildly inaccurate, it is probably gas cutting the bullet. Think slower powder, gas checks, harder alloy. If it is an Interarms Rossi, you might have an oversized bore. Get a bigger bullet. I shoot .454s in a couple of mine and one requires .457 45-70 bullets. Ace
