Some suggestions for new lever gun

Post by kyonic »

Hello my name is Kyle and I just got a steal of a deal on a Puma 92 Scout Rifle. This is the Puma that comes with the removable rear comb and long eye relief scope installed. Well I have no use for the scope or comb because I want to shoot this gun with the sights. I am wondering since I got this gun off of a buddy if it originally came with a rear sight because when I removed the scope mount I found that there is a dovetail or grove for a rear sight. The purpose for this gun will be for deer next year here in Indiana and like i said I would like to do it open sights. So if you guys know what rear sight should be on the back let me know or a different aftermarket on that would be better for this application? One more question, does anyone know what the size for plugs or set screws that I can get to fill in the exposed scope base holes? Thanks for you time.

Welcome Kyle

I don't have a Puma 92, so I don't know the answer to your questions, but somebody will be along shortly who does.

kyonic,

Welcome to the forum.

Although I'm not familiar with that specific model of Puma 92, all the others I've seen do have a rear sight mounted in a dove tail near the rear of the barrel. If that dovetail is standard it will accept any rear sight with a 3/8" dovetail. These can be had almost anywhere and many of us have spares as well.

Our resident 92 expert is Nate Kiowa Jones, a great gunsmith in Texas. He'll probably be around soon, but his contact information is:

If you give him a call I'm positive he can help with any questions you'll come up with on that rifle.

It's time to customize your gun to meet your needs. Any Lyman or Marbles cabine sight that fits in a 3/8 dovetail. But your options are flat top , semi buckhorn or full buckhorn. I would tap it for a side mount peep . Any Lyman or Williams rear peep for older Win 94s should work.

I usually replace the rear barrel-mounted sights with Williams FP's mounted on the side of the receiver, or use the B-Square scope mounts, but when I fiddled with one of them to put in a 'dovetail blank' - I think the standard dovetail blank didn't fit because the rifle's groove was just slightly bigger than 'standard'.

Maybe it's "metric?"

I didn't mess with it further, since I wasn't intending to replace anything in the dovetail (just left it empty), but it didn't seem so loose that a regular dovetail sight with maybe a bit of shimming or peening wouldn't work ok.

Hi Kyle,
Welcome to the fire. Your gun is made by Rossi of brazil. For years the old interarms imported Rossi's came with a .400 cut dovetail so the standard 3/8"-.375 aftermarket sights like the marble would just fall through. Your gun was imported by Legacy Sports Inter. The Rossi's they import have dovetails that start out as standard 3/8" but they drive the sights in and it swages the dovetail too big again. This is because the site bases they are using are too big. Rather than fit the sight better they just use a bigger hammer.
In the case of your Scout scope gun there is a possibility that it has never had a sight driven in so it may still be 3/8".
If it's not contact me. I've got some sights that will work.

Kyle, welcome to the fire! Good to see another Hoosier on the forum! I'm more of a Marlin guy so I don't have any advice for you on your Puma, but Steve (Nate) is the man when it comes to the Model 92 and its clones. I can give a big thumbs up to the Williams FP peep sight, way better than standard open iron sights.

I ordered a Skinner sight last week for my new Rossi lever action , pretty sure it's new manufactured in mid to late 08 , maybe Rossi are using correct size dovetail now ??. My gunsmith knocked out the rear sight for me and miked the dovetail at .380 [ Im sure .380 is 3/8" in hundredths ] , told me to order a standard 3/8th replacement and it would work just fine . I'm wondering now after reading Steves post where he said .375 is the correct size , was I given dud advice ?? . Skinner sights will custom cut the dovetail to suit for no extra charge as well and they come with a locking screw .

ok great well thanks for the great welcome and being very helpful! I have decided to go with a marble's full buckhorn or semi-buckhorn i am still not sure yet. "any suggestions?" I was also wondering if I should go with the short or long blade? Just to give you all some info I will be using this gun to hunt with this fall at ranges out to 100 yards.

You didn't say what cal your gun is but if it's a 454 casull go with the low semi on the short leaf. Because of the heavy recoil you will get some muzzle rise. The long high semi ususally requires a taller front sight to work with it.

Hi Jacko,
It's .375 for 3/8" but .005 over is not too bad.
If your guy knows what he is doing he can grow some metal to tighten it up, at least to a point.
