Howdy,
I know that Winchester sold my model of carbine with several factory options, so there's quite a bit of variation in what is a "stock" Model 94. Mine is different from most that I've seen on the internet, in two ways: first, mine doesn't have a saddle ring at all, even though it's of the same design. If it came that way stock, I'm assuming it would be an "Eastern Carbine"? Secondly, the magazine barely goes past the forend stock, not all the way up to the end of the barrel like so many others that I've seen. There is only one barrel ring on the forend....no need for a second one just behind the front sight.
Is it most likely that these were modifications made later, or could the carbine be ordered this way? The parts have the same amount of crud, tarnish and wear as the rest of the weapon does, so if the were modifications made later, they were made early on.

1909 Model 94 variations
I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6!
Re: 1909 Model 94 variations
At that time, Winchester would accept a customer's Special Order for pretty much anything.
Some of the options, besides sights, were barrel length, magazine length, stock style (PG or straight), buttplate shape, takedown (Y/N) and triggers (IIRC).
It sounds like someone ordered a half, or "button", mag for yours, along with a saddle ring delete - which represents less than 10% of all Winchester 94's.
Only the "Extra Finish" arms (engraved, presentation wood, inlays) went to the Custom Shop.

I think an eastern carbine is one without a saddle ring.
