Limited editions for sure, but the bidding price is pretty steep considering the No. 1 is missing parts !

That number one is beautiful! Dandy one for the collector for sure. I'll wait for the standard production.

Big bucks for, at best, journeyman-level engraving, most of which is probably laser work. See Baron Technologies' website.
I'd rather put that kind of money (if I had any) into a real (pre-1915) Marlin.

Really? How can you tell? I know absolutely NOTHING about engraving, can't tell good from bad, I guess. I have only 1 engraved gun, one of the High Grade Japan '86's and I always thought it was pretty good, but when it comes down to it, heck, I guess I don't know!

Art is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen engraving that just IMHO ruined a fine gun and it was supposedly done by a master. And I have seen simple engraving that looks like it belongs there.
I have seen oil paintings that sell for millions that I would`nt hang on the outhouse wall!
The marlin above looks very fine to me. I would be proud to own it!

The engraving on that Marlin is about equal with what Browning was turning out on the Jap guns a few years back !
The finest engraving I have ever seen in person was on a Fabbri 12 gauge O/U . Also seen some really really nice Super Crown Grade Krieghoff 32's .

Art IS in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Someone paid David Geffen $140,000,000 for a Jackson Pollock dribble paintingChuck 100 yd wrote:Art is in the eye of the beholder. not too long ago. My point is that the sales blurb mentioned Baron Engraving. Check the website; it's a laser house. The gold inlays on the receiver are hand-done in all likelihood, but they lack the grace that an Alvin White or an R.J. Kornbrath would bring to the work. The gold animals lack depth, and I believe they are laser etchings, too. I hate to even mention his name, but R. L. Wilson's book Steel Canvas has some pretty fair examples of real firearms engraving. Must be getting old and crotchety, for I do not like stainless steel and black/gray laminates of any sort. I wouldn't buy number 1 even if I had the
wherewithal to do so.
