It's been a rough week, need a little help.
Monday night about 8:30 P.M. my niece's husband called and told me my 78 year old brother-in-law had a heart attack. My sister had taken a trip to Europe with her daughters for ten days and wasn't expected back until Tuesday. My brother-in-law had to have his heart shocked back to life 8 times. Two on the way to the hospital and 6 while he was being operated on. My wife and I got their early the next morning. He was just out of the operating room. He was pulling at every device they had put in him. From 10:a.m. until late that evening It was a wresting match. The staff was waiting to give him some Valium until my sister got there. After that, it calmed done for a while but he started up again that night. He has no short term memory. Nothing you say can stop him from doing things that can hurt him. He was doing better today but not as well as I hoped. While I was working with him my other sister called. Her husband had a knee replacement 5 weeks ago. He is a 75 year old big man and his knee was not doing well. He fell at a drugstore and broke his femur in half 4 inches above his knee replacement. He was operated on this morning. We are heading to Longview tomorrow to support my other sister. It looks like a lot of rehab for both. If you could spare a prayer or two I sure would appreciate it. If anybody has had any experience with a heart attack victim and their short term memory I would appreciate some input. Also some understanding of the weakness of the femur above the knee replacement, is that common? Thanks!

I talked to my sister this morning and the heart attack victim has showing a great deal of improvement. He had a good nights rest, is eating breakfast and reading the paper. You guys do great work. I'm headed for Longview now to see about my other brother-in-law. If we do as good with him he'll be doing the two-step soon. That would truly be a added miracle because he never could dance before. Thanks so much and I mean that!

While it might well be possible that your BIL will recover his short-term memory I will tell you that it is a burden for one to lose one's memory. One can't follow instructions because one can't remember them, can't remember why, and can't remember who (at least not the new faces). I've come to conclusion that I'd rather be in a wheelchair than to lose my memory. There are several of us on the forum with loved ones who have memory loss/dementia and the number one thing is to have patience. Being patient is sometimes easier said than done.

I hope everything works out all the way around. If there's anything I can do to help let me know. I'm only a couple of hours from Longview.

My prayers are with your clan. Sometimes there is a secondary clot that can affect the brain I.E TIA or CVI . Also sometimes if cardiac output is insufficient brain profusion can be hindered. A lot of times these effects are temporary. I would imagine that in the upcoming days the CT scans and angiograms will reveal a lot more. I work in a primarily Strike/ Heart attack Emergency department, and see a lot of good results given a little time. Take care.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Best of luck to all and hang in there.

Thanks so much. They are both doing better. I'm sure your prayers were of great help. God has seen fit to pull them through so far. I just got back from Longview and my sister is putting him in a skilled nursing rehab center for a few weeks. They are moving him today. Thanks again.
