Me & My .405 Wrenchester

Post by Blaine »

I took a look at this and thought it looked like one of those Pancho Villa photos where everyone is ugly as heck and showing off their rifle.....Guilty as Charged!!! I sure love this rifle and need to get dies ASAP.......

My 405 is my "go to" rifle. I know that whatever I hit with it, is just flat going down....when you get your dies let us know and I'll share my favorite load. BTW: Check out Hawk bullets website...they make some awsome bullets for the old 405. The 405 is the only cartridge I've used that actually picked up a deer, turned him sideways in mid air, and slammed him to the ground, and since I shoot the 40-82, the 35 Win, the 38-72 and .375 Win. amongst others that is saying something...

I'll never forget the 90% perfect .405 with special order wood and Lyman 21 that I
passed up for $1200 about 15 years ago.

That rifle still haunts me. What a beauty. I was still in college and had to chooes between tuition and the Winny.

Should have bought the Winchester and taken a semester off!

Blaine,

Midway has the dies I think Cabela's does too. RCBS Heritage dies. I love mine. The more of us that shoot this cartridge the more companies will get on board. This is be far my fabvorite rifle.

I had a beaut that I sold to Bryan Pettet to finance another project. I got a good deal so I passed that along to Bryan. He did the same and the guy he sold it to has killed an elk or two with it as I understand it from Bryan.
I sold that rifle and a Harry MCGowen 450 Alaskan on a Winchester model 71 and those mistakes still give me nightmares!

Tubby you think you like that rifle now, just wait till you get a hold of a set of dies and start loading for it. It turns into a really versatile piece of riflery then. :D

You can get the lyman 21 sight with the correct mounting screws from www.peabodyrifles.com. 175$ If I recall
I like the hornady dies, but I'm thinking adding a Lyman M die to replace the hornady expander might be a good thing to do, especially with cast bullets.

By the way, you're going to have to drop the "Tubby" moniker. You are down-right small compared to the fellas who always end up sitting next to me when I'm on a plane. Never fails!
