Leverguns Safari 2009 - SPRING
The next Leverguns TX Safari will be the second weekend in APRIL - arrive Friday around noon through Sunday afternoon. The location is near San Antonio, TX. Included is lodging, guiding, animal prep, transport to butcher and or taxidermist, limited rifle range use if necessary and trophy bass and catfish with your own bait or artificial lures. Food is as a group cook in camp or in town pay your own way.
Pricing: $100 covers your 2 1/2 days. Animals will be the best price I can possibly do. Goats, rams and does (any species) and hogs are available at $350 each. Select cull animals such as buck sika, axis or fallow deer are usually available for around $500. We have water buffalo, elk, sika, fallow, axis and blackbuck, aoudad, red deer, watusi, longhorns, scimitar horned oryx, yak, hogs and some others that may be available. HOGS - fair chase 100% wild and no guarantee - but we will bait and use every trick in the book to work hard in getting you one. All others will be 100% opportunity. Let me know your tentative wish list for species and any pricing limits so I can keep tabs on what is available.
The forum will host at least one guest for free so a small portion of the price will contribute towards the guests that you are hosting.
Please chime in with interests, questions, suggestions and comments.
SPECIAL - economic condition and other circumstances have effected some of us, no doubt. I am going to offer some hogs and some feral goats for $225 total hunt cost. These are good eating and are great for bullet testing. If you don't want the meat I have arranged to donate them to a local assistance program for poor families. I am also going to allow a child or spouse to hunt for 1/2 price! We will also have fishing for trophy bass and eating sized yellow catfish at no additional charge.
Some water buffalo specials with broken horns or one shorter than the other $1350
Please let me know your interest and availability asap.

I was teasing about the freebie. That should rightly go to a returning vet, or other deserving person.

Man, I wish I could do this, but I've already been informed that I will not be taking any more hunting trips until I take the family to Disney. And that likely won't happen for another year or so.

This is always a lot fun. You get to meet fellow Levergunners. Talk guns, see what the other guy has, hunt and tell lies
. A lot of different animals to see and hunt, some you will probably never see anywhere else. The weather that time of the year is mild, jacket at night and maybe no jacket or a light one during the day. Great way to shake off the winter cold.

Re: Leverguns Safari 2009 - Winter
I will be checking to see if I can go on this one. It may take a while to find out. The one this past February couldn't have been any more fun. 86er and the owner, Richard, make sure that you aren't disappointed. The in town food was good, and I think that my putting Pico on a breakfast burrito sort of scandalized some of the fellers from other states. They weren't sure if I was crazy or not for using jalapeno-tomato-onion mix at breakfast. I made some new friends and had a great time hunting. In fact, I am taking my Daughter there after she graduates high school in 2009 for a hunt.

I could do it if it was the weekend of February 21st and 22nd. I could commit and put my money down right away. I would probably arrive days early to sight-in my guns for the local terrain and elevation (I would like to use Old 3120 but that is not absolutely necessary and I also have a friend I could visit in Texas.
I'm new to hunting, but have my license and it would be great to learn the trade from 86er and my fellow Levergunners!!

Re: Leverguns Safari 2009 - Winter
Since I've been told I'm invited to this safari, Tutt just reminded me of the license. Do I need to get an out of state hunting license? If so how much does one cost?
Also I plan on bringing maybe three rifles and a short gun. The rifles will be my 1950 Win 94 in 30-30, Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .45 Colt, and maybe the Marlin MR-7 in 30-06. The handgun will be my OM Ruger in .45 Colt.
What I need to know is what animules are huntable with the 30-30 and.45 Colt rifle and maybe the 30-06? And what kind of ammo I should bring.
I'm not new to hunting, but I might as well be. The last hunt I was on was in 1982 when I got my javalina in AZ. Eee gads, that's a quarter century ago ... I'm gettin old
Blaine is right too. This will be a great time to meet forum members. Sounds like a fun time to me.

The topography is level and vegetation is classic Texas brush...and thick, too. You'll likely be best served by your .30-30 as long as you don't want to take a nilgai, bison, longhorn, or watusi. Bring your '06 as a backup, with a reasonably low-powered scope.
I'm sure Joe will give you the real lowdown, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

RSY is correct on the license and they can be purchased at the wal-mart in Hondo. Joe can give more info but he is at the ranch this week for a hunt.

Thanks for the info. I'm making a list and checking it twice ...

Mater of fact if I can arrange it I'm gonna stop off in Port Arthur and visit with Nate Kiowa Jones. It is right one the way.
Can you fine tune the location of the ranch the hunt is on? I'd like to google map it and start planning out my route.
TIA

Just get to Hondo, and then you'll go south on TX 173. I can PM you the actual coordinates of the bunkhouse if you want them.J Miller wrote:RKrodle wrote:Can you fine tune the location of the ranch the hunt is on? I'd like to google map it and start planning out my route.

Re: Leverguns Safari 2009 - Winter
J Miller,
NKJ lives over in Port Arthur and the ranch is just outside of Hondo, west of San Antonio. My Microsoft Street and Trips says it about 333.6 miles between the two. Port Arthur is east of Houston near the Louisiana state line. It a pretty straight shot down Interstate 10 so travel time should be good except for around Houston. Houston traffic is terrible no matter what time of day. Should be about a 5 to 6 hour drive.

Yep, that was my thoughts too. I wanted to stop and BS a bit with NKJ. And it might surprise you to learn that Houston traffic won't faze me a bit. I'll just pretend I'm in Phoenix again. Actually I've been through Houston twice. Once from both directions.
Got lost there in a rain storm heading to FL in 90 for my wife's fathers funeral. Ugh, lousy trip, I'll tell you.
Any way thanks for the info. This will be a first for me. I've been "through" Texas a bunch of times on I-10 and I-40. But I've never been "to" anyplace in Texas yet.

Watusi are hard to take with a .30-30? That's kinda surprising. I know they'll run forever if you don't hit 'em hard on the first shot, like Brahmas.
You ever considered stocking Zebus? It'd be fun to watch people that think they're Brahmas shoot ten feet over 'em all day. They're petty tough little bastards. I have a permanent knot on my ribs from one of 'em objecting to my ideas of livestock handling. It's okay, though; it's almost exactly in the same spot as the knot from broke ribs on the OTHER side!

You can use any firearm you want. The 30-30 would suffice for 90% of the animals on the ranch. It would be a little wanting on the large bovines except for ideal close range in-the-ear shots.

I enjoyed my time last year though I never got off a shot.
I throw in a tentative Yes for now.
I'll pack a better camera, and my long handles for that wind-swept tree stand. Watching the rams butt heads from on high was just like when I was a kid watching Wild Kingdom.

I don't think I can make it Joe. I've got expenses to pay for Jeremiah and I am considering a yearling mule replacement which will take away my play money for the time period. I will let you know if that changes. Blessings

The Chrony is off to the factory for repairs (finally). I think I'll make it part of my "traveling" gear for our future get togethers.
Hope to see you guys earlier in December for that one too.

Re: Leverguns Safari 2009 - Winter
Due to a conflict with several interested people, the Leverguns Safari 2009 scheduled for February will now be the held in APRIL. The second weekend is looking good - but post when it works best for you.

OK, 86er;
Lets talk. Will you have a nice big East Indian antelope with stumpy horns that I can shoot with my .405?
You know,a Nilgai like the big one that you shot.
I have sold enough work now to pay for the house remodel at the farm, but will be working like crazy till mid January to deliver it all. However, that should make it OK for a February hunt. Maybe I can ride down with Ricky so my Chey truck will not break carrying that big trophy back to Dallas.

Hey Joe, just curious but are there any Warthogs in Texas? Seems like Texas has every other game animal species on Earth. Always wanted to pop a Warthog.

Re: Leverguns Safari 2009 - Winter
No warthogs due to a Fedeal USDA restriction on importation of swine by-products or tissue or bone marrow (including live animals) of non-regulated swine species that do not meet US criteria for health an disease standards. There is a lengthy process to obtain one for a zoo or with a zoological permit, and usually those are born in captivity in the US, but that doesn't really apply to hunting ranches anyway.
