OT - Savage Super Sporter 30-30

Who know's about these? I saw one a a gun shop yesterday for the first time, and it is a interesting rifle. This particular one had very nice, but shallow, engraving, including the Savage Indian, on the receiver.

Does anyone know if these were ever offered with factory engraving? I suspect it's aftermarket. It also has a strange silver'ish engraved barrel band, and what looks to be a homemade plastic pistol grip cap.

Is this the same as the Model 340? Model 40? Model 45? There just really isn't a lot of info on these.

IIRC, the Super Sporter was an upgraded Model 40 (also called Super Sporter), designated the Model 45 - made 1928-1940 with checkering & a #40 Lyman peep from the factory. The Model 40 had no checkering and a flat-top barrel rear sight only - which was usually left on the M45 when the peep was added. Both had detachable magazines.

The other extras you mentioned sound like add-ons, IMO.

Among the model 40's and 45's I've had there have been some plain stocked model 40's Marked "Super Sporter" .1 still here like that is a 30/30..Both the 40 and 45 were made with two different styles of magazine releases,one of which is by way of inletting in the right side of the stock..depending on price & condition I would be interested in obtaining the one you found.! It has checkering and the Lyman peep, so it must be a 45. The mag release was not in the stock, rather it was on the bottom left side of the magazine well (or was it the right?).

Natedontgo...what do you think about the engraving?

Oh, the price was $700 IIRC, or maybe it was $799...somewhere in there. But I don't think they knew what it was either. The Blue Book puts these rifles in the $250 to $300 range, so that engraving would have to be factory to justify the price tag.

71fan: No Sav.mdl 40 or 45 that I've handled had factory engraving,OR a Barrel band, Unless documented o'wise,It's not OEM work. At anywhere near the asking price,I'd stall until I could find out what. if anything, the Savage Historian might say..(see the Sav.collectors forum @ 24 hr.campfire) As presently priced ,it's approaching what a decent Win 54.rifle in 30/30 might bring...Best, Nate

If it was a .250-3000, it might bring the strong money - but I think I'd rather have a .250-3000 Model 1920.
