The USMC has done decided to station the kid out at Camp Pendleton, Kalifornia. I'd made up my mind I was never goin' to set foot in that state again (call me paranoid) but next summer we're gonna be in the US of A for a couple months and high on the list of priorities is spending time with the kids. That means - you got it - I'm headin' for Camp Pendleton sometime next summer. Sigh.
Well, guess I'll just have to make the best of it. What's on the "gotta see" list for Kalifornia? Especially down 'round Camp Pendleton? We'll either be traveling north from there to WA state or south from WA state - it depends on how we end up scheduling everything. Any tips on "gotta see" along the route would be appreciated. What's the coastal road like? I hope we're not having to haul our rears quickly at that point and thus can stay away from freeways when moving through. If I've gotta go through the place I want to take time to appreciate what the state's got to offer. I've nothing against the land, scenery, etc... it's the laws and liberals I've got issues with.
Thanks!

Highway 1 along the coast, from San Louis Obisbo, going North to at least Montery, a very cool place to visit. There is a neat mission at Carmel. One of the most beautiful places on earth.
Sequoia National Park (after Sept. 1st very little crowd, but Snow often blocks the road during the Winter)
Yosemite
Hearst Castle(this is not too far off Hwy 1 above and is really a neat thing to do)
NAPA valley wine tours...don't drink too many samples and drive off to the next winery!
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
If you're in WA I sure hope you'll make time to meet up with some of us guys around here. I'd like to buy you a meal if you have time to eat.
I suggest a GPS unit for taking the headache out of travel. It's a safety feature with no competition. Tells you what lane to drive in, or not drive in, in time to save your life. Really. Saves your bacon if you make a gas stop somewhere you don't want to hang around, gives you quickest route back to your route. And hey, you can't get lost as long as you have a signal... sorry if you're already up to speed on GPS.
The entire CA coastline is a wonder. San Diego has great waterfront parks. Plus the Presidio. Plus Sea World. Plus a world class Zoo. Plus a world class aquarium. Plus a lot of like minded fellow pilgrims. Plus it's almost far enough away from LA. Plus Torry Pines where you can watch the gliders fly among the seabirds.

Gunz? What gunz? I'm a peaceful, peace loving preacher man who will be traveling through the land o' Kalifornia. Gunz? Why would I have gunz with me? We're just a couple of middle aged missionaries on home service duty. Dat's all we is...

Yep - That's what some upstanding citizen of Araby, who was living locally, tried on Logan Airport security when they found 11 dis-assembled guns in his checked luggage last week !
THEN, he changed his story to: "I was only going to get them for a few friends in Syria."
He's still "being detained".
I heard that Commiefornia now has buzzers, that go off, when innocent folks enter, armed. Gangbangers seem undetectable, though.
Stay away from LA or SF (or anywhere close to there) and you'll be fine. Just get a nice, hooked wooden cane from RiteAid and walk with it. Don't miss some of the best scenery in the world to avoid a few million a******s in a couple cities

If you're going to be in or going through Costa Mesa let me know. I've give you my brothers address and you can stop by and tell him I said hi. Make out like you're a lawyer, that will get him..
Other than their idiotic gun laws CA isn't much different that the real world.
Yeah, right. I read that somewhere.

I wish I could give you better news, but I can't think of anything worth seeing in Southern, CA...I too was stationed at Camp Pendleton, and have never been back.
Perhaps the San Diego Zoo...or a trip south of the Boarder to Mexico for some shopping. The USS Midway is there to go aboard...that would be cool. My Dad served on the USS Midway and now it is set up as a Museum.
Congrats to your son for earning the Title... Marine...God Speed.
Hey he will love it there.
Places to see
Seaworld
USS Midway
The San Diego Wild Animal Park
San Diego Zoo
Tell him to go to the ITT office he can get discount tickets to most of the atractions in SoCal.
Make sure he pays a visit to the game warden on base there is lots of hunting on pendleton they also have really nice Trap and Skeet range on base $7 rents you a gun and pays for a round of skeet.
Wish I was still out there I would take him out for deer season even could lend him a gun but alas here I sit in NE Indiana. Maybe he will still be out there in 3 years when I rotate I know a couple of great coyote and deer spots on base.

The San Diego Zoo is a must see. If you're heading North through Oregon, then another must see is the Evergreen Aviation Museum.....home to Howard Hughes Spruce Goose.
If I'm still in Az. you can store the "gunz " you do not have at my place.
Even my detractors say I can cook up a MEAN brisket.

It's a beautiful place to visit if ya stay out of town: That's the rule in every state, ain't it? Up north in Eurikia, don't miss the Samoa CookHouse!!!! Best food anywhere at any price.

Going to or from Washington, the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose.
They have a great display for Winchester rifles. Morro bay has a rock they're real proud of.
There's Solvang just north of Santa Barbara. It's sort of Danish village place. There's a knife
shop full of Randalls there(Nordic Knives). The zoo or wild animal park in the SD area, if that's
your taste. I'd stay away from TJ or any other part of the Cal-Mex border. Too much trouble
from the drug cartels. If you lock any firearms, unloaded in the trunk, you'll be okay.

Boy, what a mess them .45's make.
When seconds mean life or death, the police are only minutes away.

Makes it hard to retrieve in case of need - in which case I'd NOT be OK - one of my reasons for preferring to stay away from the left coast (and huge portions of the east coast as well). Sigh. But that looks like the way it'll have to be. I put up with enough of that type of stuff as it is - it galls me to have to put up with it while in "the land of the free"... But I'll be sure to enjoy other portions of my stay, that's for sure. It's the whole socialistic "gov't knows best" excreted male bovine feed that galls me about the People's Republic (and WA state as far as that goes)
Anyway, thanks for the tips guys. We've a few months to plan this out and only a couple days to "make it happen". The main concern is family time with the Marine, anything other than that is just gravy.

Actually if they catch you with a firearm on most military bases, no matter what state it's located in, you'll get to be their "guest" for quite some time.

I'm sorry, there's just no relationship or tourist attraction that make it worth surrendering my rights or dignity to even enjoy casual travel through the People's Republic.
Been there. Left. No loss.
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

You know, as one of the few Califonia natives, I'm very happy you all decided to leave. Now if we could just get the rest of the immigrants, whether they be legal from other countries, illegals from other countries, or those of questionable immigration status from other states, to leave, why it would be right nice. You don't really think all the liberal types here are natives do you? Nope, They came here and messed it up for they native Californian conservatives. So, next time you come to visit and leave, take all your darned relatives with you. I can only imagine how nice southern California traffic would be if you would all just "GO HOME".
