OT - Coupla new toys.

Post by Leverdude »

Picked up a couple of Rugers in the past week or so.

A single six with both cylinders, box manual & all that jazz. Says made in the 200th year of our liberty so I guess its a 1976 vintage.

And a Vaquero Bisley 357. Its newer than the single six but I dont know when it was made, just figure its newer because its got warnings on the barrel.

I'm saving for a Redhawk 44 Mag next I saw in a small local shop. :D

Nice additions! And I agree on the Single Six - I do! And a MkII as well :)

I'd like to have one of the older ones with a 6" barrel.

There was a list on SASS wire awhile back on VAQUERO serial numbers. It indicates yours was made in 1999.

You have a somewhat rare one....I don't know exact numbers, but you don't see them very often. The BISLEY VAQUERO isn't common in any length; stainless, 4 5/8 barrel and standard grip frames are available. I paid $500 for a NIB 5.5 stainless BISLEY VAQUERO 357 with factory fake ivories 2 years ago...and then found an identical one used for $400 a few months later on an internet auction site. The 44s are not very common either.

I had action/trigger jobs done by Jim Stroh (ALPHA PRECISION) and a variety of replacement grips. EAGLE GRIPS gunfighter model in buffalo horn, either smooth or checkered, really look and feel great on BISLEYS.

Enjoy an excellent acquisition. Discontinuing Original Size VAQUEROS/BISLEY VAQUEROS is right up with MARLIN discontinuing the 24 inch barrel on Cowboy rifles...and the 30/30 Cowboy!
When they said SHARPS, I always thought BIG 50!

Very nice Ken! The Ruger Bisley has a better shaped grip than the original Colt. At least it feels better in my hands than the Colt did.

I thank you Sir! :)

Vall,

It seems to point very well for me, I will find out tomorrow if I can hit anything with it.

Nice Rugers !I've been fondling Ruger blackhawks with Bisley grips and I think I need one. But all I run across are the stainless steel models. I'm not sure what caliber to get yet 44 or 45. I'll just have to keep stoppping at gunshops till I find the right one. :)

Very good I think.
I started with a plinking load my Rossi likes, 5.5 GR red dot under a 158 gr Rem sp. Was very controlable & after a few shots easily held 4" offhand at about 30 feet or so but shot a little high.
Then I moved up to a 16 gr Li'l gun load under a 158 gr nosler HP. That one barked a little more but shot to point of aim & when I really tried kept them in the same 4". I think with practice I should be able to improve quite a bit. I'v not done much handgun shooting. I supose I'm competent enough but there is alot of room for improvement. I was able to connect pretty regular on bowling pins at 50 yards when I sat down. Scared the heck out of them standing up but couldn't whack them regular. Its alot easier to hit with than my Beretta tho. I'll burn up a 15 round mag & not kill a pin with that at 50 yards. When I do hit one its mostly luck.
I was going to save the targets to post but my boy put a few dozen more holes in them when I was talking.

Anyway I'm a bit surprised the sights are so well regulated, being fixed & all. I believe I'll carry it hunting this year, I'll still be useing a rifle as my main gun, but if bambi pops up close enough & I'm confident enough I'd like to take a deer with it. It'll be a first for me.

The single six shot pretty well too but the triggers nothing like the Vaquero. Much heavier but it breaks nicely. I may start accumulating revolvers for awhile. I'm pretty set on buying a 44 Red hawk I found at a local shop. Its mostly an archery & fishing place but he sells a few guns. This particular Redhawk he took to Africa & killed a few things, now he's done with it & if we can come to terms I'll buy it.
It'll have to wait a bit tho while I accumulate some gun money. These two bout tapped me out.

Shot my 336 for the first time in awhile & it still loves 36 grains of Blc2 under a 150 grain pill.
The first target I was adjusting a bit. The first 3 were high. I moved the williams 5P down a few lines & got the other two slightly right but ok elevation wise. Another small adjustment gave me the second target. I was tempted to try & move the group a bit to he right but talked myself out of it. For me thats pretty good with open sights at 50 yards.

Also had my 1889 32/20. What a nice gun to shoot! Its tough to get little groups with the carbine sights & my eyeballs but its sure a fun plinker. Took awhile to get the rear sight low enough but now busting clays at 50 yards with it is simple. No recoil to speak of, its just nice.
Heres my oldest with it, he looks awkward but thats because he dont want to lose my brass. We have a deal, he can shoot anything I bring unless he loses brass. That ones easy, it lust dumps them out on the bench if you go slow. If he loses any brass he cant shoot that one next trip. It works pretty good & he tries like heck to keep track of it.

A couple pics of guns on the bench,

I brought my 1895 45/70 too to check zero but didn't take any pictures of it. Its quite the bowling pin killer tho.

All in all I had a great time! I'm very slow at work so hopefully I can get more shooting time in. It dont pay good but its sure alot more fun than work!

All these nice pictures, of guns, shooting, fellowship, makes a guy almost smell the burnt gunpowder in the air. Thanks for the glimpse of those new toys---toys for big boys!
