O.T. found a new favorite beer
U.F.O. Harpoon's Unfiltered Offering. HEFEWEIZEN unfiltered wheat beer. Yummy! What better topic for an early fall Friday night? Grill is going and the Red Sox are playing the Yanks in a totally meaningless game if there exists such a thing between the two franchises. 1886.

Re: O.T. found a new favorite beer
Well its durn near time someone post a topic that's worthwhile!
For a good ale, Sierra Nevada's Fresh Hop beers are the best thing available when not fresh off the tap! The fresh hops that have to be shipped overnight (and use 3 times as much as they are not dried) really add to the taste.
For Porters or Stouts, Fuller's English Porter is one of the best in the world. It has a very complex flavor and can be found at your local BevMo.
For a wheat beer, I would have to give Pyramid unfiltered beers the nod. There are other unfiltered beers of this type, but these guys really have it down.
I am thrilled that I live a half-hour from Boonville, CA where Anderson Valley beers are made. On tap, these beers are just amazing but they don't let you take growlers home!
Anyhow, thanks for a great topic!

Re: O.T. found a new favorite beer
My drinking days are over. I quit drinking, smoking cigarettes, and weed when I turned 40. I probably drank enough Pabst Blue Ribbon and Genesse Cream Ale 16 ouncers, along with a bottle of Jack every now and then to fill up a few tanker trucks.
I just got sick of it--feeling crummy all the time. But.......I was one of those guys who could not drink 2 or three beers and call it quits--it was 12 or nothing. ---------------------Sixgun

Re: O.T. found a new favorite beer
I haven't had a beer in a while, but here are my 2 favorites if anyone is interested.
Paulaner Hefeweisen
![Image](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v644/engrtobe/paul.jpg)
and
Franziskaner Hefeweisen
![Image](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v644/engrtobe/franzi.jpg)
I'm probably in the minority, but I like to get them out, open them up and let them sit on the counter for 10-15 minutes to warm up. IMO, they had much more flavor when they were slightly chilled vs ice cold.
If you can find them, pick some up, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you like a Hefeweisen.

awp101, i still own a house that we rent out down in san antonio, so dont be too surprised if i take you up on your offer.
used to be, back then, the pearl and lone star used to make dark beer at times, was on tap up in new braunsfels as i recall.
dang, i miss some things about Texas, the two main ones being the beer and the other the Texans themselves, and not necessarily in that order!

Re: O.T. found a new favorite beer
While cruising along the PA turnpike last month a truck passed us with the full Sierra Nevada logo on it's side. It made me feel like home. It seems that they are expanding to the East Coast, which sorta came as a surprise to me. The fact that they grow their own Cascade hops on site and have a solar electric set up that generates enough for the brewery AND sends the excess out to the grid gives then a huge positive in my book.
I just returned from a fundraiser where another excellent local product was served. That would be Rubicon Brewing's IPA and another great ale called Monkey Knife Fight. The name alone is good enough. Several of those and it's bed time for me.![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Re: O.T. found a new favorite beer
I used to make my own beer. I was a size 38 and went to a 46 in no time. Needless to say I don't make beer anymore. I do like it but with the diet I cut beer right out. I can have a glass or two of wine now and then .
Once every six weeks I will have a couple of beers. One of my favorites is a good ole Black and Tan. Guiness and Smithwicks Ale. The lighter Guiness floats on top of the Smithwicks in a tall 24 ounce glass.

Borregos, I think I can get that Fuller's you mentioned. Will try to do so next week when I'm in Santa Rosa again.
I'm really lucky up here in Ukiah that the Mendocino Brewing Co. and Anderson Valley Brewing Co. are just minutes away from me!
Grizzly, I will have to go looking for that brewery in Alaska next time I'm there.

My favorite is brewed by BJ's Pizza and brewery. Its their Jeremiah's Red it is a nice mediam dark ale very smooth. To bad there aren't any BJ's in north east Indiana I think they are just a SoCal chain. Guess I will have to make due with Sam Adams.

Re: O.T. found a new favorite beer
Yes, Shiner used to be the cheap beer in the '70's - along with Buckhorn and Pearl. I bought many a six-pack for $.99. The price began to climb around here when the exotic stuff from the micro breweries started showing up in the late 1980's. Does anyone here remember Celis? It was brewed in Austin and was one of those premium labels - I met Pierre Celis some years ago in Gruene Hall when he was just beginning to peddle his brand (this was long before they sold it to Miller). I think Wheat Blond was one of his first ones - that was pretty good beer.O.S.O.K. wrote: Shiner's aren't such a bargain any more.... unfortunately. And the Blonde is my new favorite - it doesn't give me headache if I uh drink a few too many...
For a long time, HEB in Schertz had Shiner Bock for 9.99 per 12 but they went up to 11.99 - I'm told it's to cover the higher fuel surcharge - pfeh!
My sons drink "Land Shark" which is a label by Jimmy Buffett. It's not bad - especially when they are buying...
