Hunting with 1895 winchester

Howdy all I am new to the forum and just wanted to post. So I will start with a hunting picture from 98. I love hunting with lever guns and really like hunting hogs with big bore lever guns but never take pics of that. So heres a nice Texas deer, the rifle is a late model 1895 winchester in 30-06 . Thanks for the welcome , I live in the metro mess, of DFW been stuck up here for 12 yrs, hate it. But I have a place in Jacksboro that I own an I am hunting hogs every chance I get.

Nice looking deer and rifle.
I have been scheming and figuring on how to get my dirty mitts on a 1895 win in 405 for sometime now, and this last week everything finally came together and I am waiting for the big brown truck to hit the front door of my FFL. Should be here near the middle of the week.

I'm glad to see that a few hunters use the Winchester 1895. Once in a while my little .30-06 gets out to the hills. Here's a little buck from year before last.

Great lookin' rifle and deer. What year is that one? I wish I could afford another real 1895. I had a 1920 once and traded it off many moons ago. I am working on getting a Browning 1895 at least that are made just like the real ones without that stupid tang safety.......don't get me started on that poor idea.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I have a few rifles but by far levers are my favs. I grew up hunting in north Texas in the woods where the longest shot was 75yrds. So of course open sight lever guns is what worked best my first was a 99 savage in 300savage. My life long admiration for Teddy Roosevelt and John Browning got me into the great 1895 winchester, John and Teddy were way ahead of there time and you can see that by things they both left behind. Thanks again and get out and shoot a critter with a lever.........

I love my 95. Mine is in .405 Win. I would love to have one in .30-06.

Welcome ! My most accurate levergun is my Browning 1895 in 30-06. Working up some loads with 180 gr speers.

I'm glad to see you 'round the fire, also, I might add. My little SRC is a 1924 vintage .30-Gov't '06. Seen a lot of use, but mechanically tight and mint bore. It shoots like a dream and is a lot more accurate than I expected.

Wow , what a welcome glad to see there is some 95 guys out there. I just went back in the hole. I found a real 1895 in 30-40 krag not sure how old yet didn't get the ser# But it will be nice to have a real one again. It even has the hard to find lyman elevator sight on it......Will post some pics when I get it thanks again for the nice welcome Pack.

I am a fan of the 95 also. I have a Browning 95 in .30-06 which, last year, I finally added a Williams receiver sight to, and got rid of the slick steel buttplate for a nice rubber buttpad. This is a great gun.

While the 95 has it's strong point's and drawbacks, after fooling around with and owning lots of different leveractions, I got to say, that a good 95 just might be the most reliable leveraction of all of John Browning's designs. In a tight siduation, I would probably trust my Browning 95, to feed fire and eject, until it ran dry, more so, then any leveraction I have, and I have quite a few.

I don't live in TExas but I did drive through the DFW area a couple of times AND I have a Browning 1895 .30-40 and it is worth looking for!

I love my 95 - an older refinished 30 US that I picked up in Dallas at the market hall show some time ago - like 10 years. Got a good deal because of the refinish and the bore was frosted - which I ameliated with some firelapping. Recently installed one of the Buffalo Arms Lyman repro sights:

My 1895 Win. is the Texas Model. The serial # is TEX######. The reciever is case hardened colored with a gold colored trigger.

Welcome to the fire! There are many Winny '95 fans here, and for good reason. I've hunted a few times with this one, chasing mulies in Wyoming and California. No blood yet, but it's a very accurate levergun and quite capable of the task. It's a 303 Brit takedown born in 1922, with a Lyman 21 receiver sight.
