Dave,
1937 And yep, you can never have too many leverguns, or for that matter, any thing with a trigger. I'm sure there are 99 forums out there, just "Google" it.----------Sixgun

Re: savage mod 99 303
That sounds like it would be a Model 99-H Carbine, and if it is it should be a solid frame w/ 20" medium weight barrel, matted trigger, & a straight-grip stock w/steel buttplate.
They were originally offered in .30-30, .303 Savage, & .250-3000.

What's ammo availability for these like if you don't roll your own (yet)?

[What if I found one like that only it was a take down?}
I think it might be a pretty good trick.
[What model would that be?]
It might be a previously unknown model.
AFAIK, the Model 99-H Carbine was never made as a takedown, because that model has the barrel band around the "special" stepped forend; whereas every takedown M-99 I've ever seen/owned has has no band around the non-stepped forend - which has a sliding shotgun-type latch, so it could be rapidly taken off and used as a barrel wrench during the takedown.
I've additionally never seen, read, nor heard of any other model Savage 99 with a barrel band.

If you don't reload, don't meven think about buying a Savage in .303. Brass is hard enough to come by, and ammo even harder to find loaded!

I have an H in 303 w/ the barrel band. I'll have to take some pictures with my new camera and post them sometime soon.
No factory ammo unless you buy it on gunbroker, etc. for a ridiculous price. Brass isn't too hard to come by - but not easy.
This board is 99% 99's : http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthread ... /40/page/1
Be warned - they can be a bit... onry.

Re: savage mod 99 303
I always wanted a 99H. For those that didn't know, Bill Ruger's first auto was a 99 he converted to semi-automatic. He was really fond of the 99-H, and if you look at his 44 carbine, 10/22, and No. 3, it's easy to see the influence.

Re: savage mod 99 303
A solution to the ammunition problem! Make your own cases. Here's how, according to George Nonte:
Parent case - 30/40 Krag
Turn rim down to .505" diameter. Swage head to .442" diameter. Trim case to 2.01" Size full length. Use .308" bullets
Simple, ain't it?

Re: savage mod 99 303
Reeds Custom Cartridge loads Savage 303 ammo and it is reasonably priced. The folks there have been very helpful and easy to work with.
Re: savage mod 99 303
just paid $305 for a 1920 30-30 takedown Savage 99.

Re: savage mod 99 303
Is it still a takedown? I've seen a good number of Savage 99 TD's that were rebarreled, and no longer could be taken down without a barrel wrench.bsaride wrote:just paid $305 for a 1920 30-30 takedown Savage 99.

If I remember correctly - the Graf and Sons are reforms (can't remember if it's from 30-30 or krag's). I seem to recall people not liking them much.
I could be wrong - buyer beware.

Re: savage mod 99 303
Must be formed Krag cases. The .30-30 case is too small. See my note above regarding Nonte's solution to the problem. (His book also has extensive information on turning cartridge rims, making swages, and so on.)chadbr wrote:If I remember correctly - the Graf and Sons are reforms (can't remember if it's from 30-30 or krag's).
