Hunger or a terrible stink.

He's obviously voted for the seeming lesser of two evils, but what he's actually chosen is to prefer his temporary comfort at the expense of his long-term well being.

If he just killed his antagonist he could eat and not starve to death, and the stink would eventually wear off.

But he's just a dog. What does he know?

I'd say by the gray on his muzzle that old boy has been around a bit. There's nothing like experience to give wisdom a helping hand.

Stink is everything to a dog. If you think a skunk is bad, hardwire your nose to your brain at 1000x (10,000x?) the sensitivity.

You would bash your brains out to stop the smell. Missing a single meal is nothing compared to that.
