Took 30 WCF hunting again.
Moose Album
I just returned from the tundra. Success smiled upon me again this year. I didn't have time to prepare with any of my other firearms, so again I grabbed my vintage 1/2 oct, 1/2 round Winchester model 1894 rifle from the gun cabinet along with some 170 gr. Hornady reloads and ventured forth. This Alaskan bull absorbed 4 shots broadside at 73 paces. Probably all weren't needed, but I like to shoot but am not one for chasing down wounded game. I'd like to John M. Browning is proud of his creation. I think a lot of it.
Three out of four shots passed all of the way through the animal. Only one was recovered.

Great moose! Can't count the 30-30 out as a valid moose gun.

Poor illiterate moose. He died for nothing. To bad he never read all those articles where the 30 WCF is obsolete and not enough gun to do the job. He could have just waltzed off unscathed into the wilderness if he'd only known you didn't use enough gun to do the job.
Let's see - 75% passed clear through - what happened to the "under powered" theory? Looks like y'all will have plenty of moose to see you through at least until Thanksgiving...

Mark, Thanks for the Pictures. another Great post. I have Your picture of the '07 Moose on the "beverage" cooler out in the Manroom. . It's funny to see the look on some hunters faces when they ask about the picture, and find You used a 30-30.
I guess thats # 21 eah?. Jim.

Re: Took 30 WCF hunting again.
Wow ... nice. I can't imagine the time and effort required to pack out a moose.
... I love poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking dead things with a stick.
Re: Took 30 WCF hunting again.
Neat album and you guys should see the stash of .303 Savage ammo! Of course his photo album makes sharing the photo a real pain...

Re: Took 30 WCF hunting again.
Well I am truly honored to be featured on the beverage cooler in a man room. That is the mark of making it in this world. I lucked out and was able to shoot this moose after only two hours of hunting. It helps to know where to start looking. Shooting it close to the boat is a plus in hauling out meat. The family is set for another year.
Jim, it is my 21st bull. A little narrower than last year's by 2" but has taller palms and better brow tines. This rack measures 63" across.
This bull was bedded with two others, one about a 40" bull and the other high 40's. They were left as seed for future seasons. The animals chose poorly when they decided to rest in relatively short cover. Stalk close, but not too close, and the bulls will arise and pause before departing. That is their Achilles heel.
Hobie, all of the .303 Savage ammo has been traded off. I can get my hands on a similar stash of vintage 35 Remington or newer 7-30 Waters. I am always on the lookout for odd ammo I run across in remote Alaskan locales. I have a similar supply of 25-35 Winchester that I protectively guard for my own use. I often wonder how it would fare on a short range moose. I am somewhat tempted to test it on a moose from a Winchester model 64 next year.

Dimrod: Really appreciate you sharing your hunt with us. That's a wonderful bull you took --- and doing it with the .30 WCF has to make the venison all the sweeter. You're living my dream!
