Butt cuffs?

Post by airedaleman »

What is the historic basis for the use of the butt cuff? I much prefer a slide-on or a drop pouch to carry a few spare cartridges.

I don't know about history. I don't remember seeing them until I got Mel Tappan's Survival guns. NOBODY I knew actually used one.

Those little ammo holders that go on the butt of your rifle or shotgun. The cuffs are usually referencing the leather version rather than the UncleMikes nylon jobbies.

I had one for a while, but I like leather and the cartridges always turn green if you leave them to long. That defeats the purpose to me because I liked to just pick up my lever and go. I don't like man made material ones so I don't use them anymore.

Sorry, all. I didn't mean to cause any stress or upset. I should have been a little more descriptive, I guess.

I'd never seen one till the mid-70s. Then it was a rare sight till I started cowboy action shootin in the mid '80s. I'm with Rangerider, I don't care for man-made materials, but... I do carry my spare ammo in a nylon belt slide for hunting; (it's also nice 'cause most any rifle round will fit in the elastic loops). Leather tanning chemicals can do a bit of damage to brass shells, which is why at the end of the day all ammo is removed from any such carriers.

I don't know the origin, but have used them at Thunder Ranch in precision rifle classes. They are very, very handy for quickly getting 1 or 2 rounds (or more) into the rifle "from position", particularly at night. One can easily reload without looking at cartridges or rifle, allowing you to keep your eyes on the target or where a deer ran, etc. Just reach back to the carrier and the cartridges are very easy to find by feel, extracting however many you want. For those who haven't used them, they might be worth a try.

Hope this helps,
John

For a pump shotgun I think a shellholder sling might be the better way to go...at least that's the route I'm planning on with my Remington 870 Tactical.

Personally, I like it. It's a great way to carry extra ammo. It's always with the gun. As to turning brass green. Yea, it can happen, but it takes a bit. Never had a problem on any trip I've taken. Here's a set up that Lever made for my GS.

I always thought they came about as a way to put a rear sling attachment on a muzzleloading rifle, especially a Hawken, without having to mutilate the wood in any way. Even a person with almost no leatherworking skill (like myself) can make one to do that, with a few pieces of buckskin, and some sinew. Don't have the slightest idea of how far in time they go back.

Not having easy access to buckskin, a few years ago I was searching for a premade one. Eventually I found Cabelas carries them regularly as a muzzleloading sling. The Goggle search for "Buttcuff" was rather disgusting.

I have never used a leather cuff, butt :P , my experiences with the nylon ones are not good. Unless you nail, staple, glue, tape, etc., them to the stock, which I cannot bring myself to do, they will not be there when you need them. Also, the ones I have never fit the gunstock and are just plain "butt ugly"!
I put one on my M-N M44 but just cannot nail, staple, glue, tape it, to a nice $70.00 gun. Know what I mean? :)

A number of single shot rifle hunters have used the but cuffs for years, as it's a handy way to keep the extra rounds close for a follow up shot.

I have only used them on single shot shotguns, they do spoil the balance though.

But they don't make them for left handed 870's. So to some of us, it's useless.
