Your Favorite .30-30 Recipes, esp for 170's.

Post by Cosmoline »

I'm pulling out my .30 WCF handloading gear and realize I have a real shortage of good accurate load recipes. I've used 3031 for the most part but never gotten great groups with it using 150 or 170 grain jacketed bullets. I currently have several hundred 170 grainers, both cast and jacketed. Rifle is a neat wartime Win 94. It will shoot excellent groups with 170 Partition factory loads, but those are $$$.

What powder/bullet combos have you found particularly accurate.

My two favourite loads for the 30-30 are ;

The Ranch Dog 311-165GC with 22 grains XMP5744 and a CCI200 primer !

Also the "357MAX" 312-150GC with 21 grains of XMP5744 and the CCI200 primer !

I am shooting both of these right now in and old Marlin 336SC micro groove rifle of 1962 vintage and they both shoot great in this little rifle !

The Ranch Dog load is what I use for Leveraction Silhouette !

Both these loads in my estimation are adequate for taking deer within 100 yards
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

Sierra 170gr JFP, WLR primer, 30gr 748. My point of aim, top of the front sight on the bottom of the belly, does not change until I shoot the 200m rams.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

With cast 165 gr. lead bullets my Winchester likes 25.0 grains of H4895.

With Speer 170 gr. jacketed soft points I up it to 30.5 grains of H4895.

Both loads use CCI 250 primers.

I use 21 grains of XMP 5744 with a 175 grain Saeco tapered cast bullet sized .311 at the base. Gives me 1800+ and 2-3" @ 100 meters out of a half dozen different pre-war 30-30's. If I hold good and tight, the 175 Saeco will sail out and hit the 400 meter turkey regularly or come mighty close to it.--------------------Sixgun

Thanks! Sounds like that XMP is the one to get for cast. I've had no luck getting patterns with light 2400 loads.

I'll give these a try.

Speer 170 FP 33 grains of Varget shoots VERY well out of my 94 Legacy and my H&R Handi .

Well, I guess you'd never like or be interested in my standard which is great for velocity and accuracy in all my .30-30s... 30 gr. IMR 3031 under the Hornady, Speer, Sierra, Remington or Winchester (PP or ST) 170 gr. bullets.
Sincerely,

Hobie

For jacketed 170s I use 30 gr of old 3031. I don't shoot many of these and my 3031 is about 10 years old. I understand that newer 3031 is faster and other load data is available.

For cast, I use the 311041, tumble lubed in LLA, sized to .309, gas checked, and tumble lubed again. 27.5 grs of 4895 and a CCI 200 primer gives me 1850 fps out of my Win 94.

I've been going with 31 or 32 grains of 3031 so maybe dropping it to 29 or 30 would tighten up the groups. I'll give it a try. I have about three pounds of that powder on hand.

Hobie gave me this same advice a couple years ago, and boy did it work for me. I couldn't quite squeeze that much powder behind my Hornady FP bullets, 28.5 grains seems to be about max for my rifles. But it does shoot well. I have a 1951 Winchester 94 that prefers 28.5 grains of Varget behind the 170 grain Nosler Partition. Not an overly fast load, but accurate.

For 170gr jacketed (Hornady, Speer, Remington) 33grs W748. I have just aquired some Varget to supplement my powder inventory as I was having trouble locating a regular supply of W748.

With cast bullets I prefer IMR 3031.

I use 28g of H322 and Horn. 170 FP. This has proven an accurate combo in my Winchesters and has also shot good out of a 14" contender barrel I once owned.
