Savage 99 NEED HELP FAST

Post by Goat »

Somebody stop me!!! I am about to buy a 99 in250/3000 for roughly $850.
That's a little more than I wanted to pay but I want it and MY WIFE is encouraging me to do it! Is this a decent price? Goat

If you gotta ask......nope, don't do it.

Is it an early takedown?
Kind regards,
Tycer

Is it too much? Well it depends on the condition and model as to what it's worth. An early original takedown in 85%+ condition that would be an absolute steal. Later models, it starts to come closer to the asking price. A mid fifties/early sixties model with a brass follower, lever safety, and good (uncracked) walnut in 85%+/- original condition is still in that range because of the caliber. Doesn't matter too much cause if you keep it in good condition with the way these are going up, it will be worth that soon enough, if it's not already. The most important thing is YOU WANT it, and they aren't making them like that anymore. I've been seeing some pretty sad 250s higher than that but they aren't moving out fast either.

A little light on the details there Goat. You need to tell us more, a lot more.

No action? Maybe you need to take a look at a 99/250 sight in target. Two sight changes.

If you can afford it, and you want it, then the price is fair. Your wife is a little different than mine, while my wife will support me in purchases, she has never encouraged me. Maybe she just saw I need no encouragement. Post some pics when you pick it up.

Something to compare to: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =107773937

Once there - check around for some others - that should help you decide.

I've gone and done it now. I won the auctionfor $795. It is a tang safety 99A in 250/3000 said to be 98%. I am a left handed shooter with no intrest in the lever safety guns and I wanted the straight stock and the 20 inch barrel. I think it was just a little too high but it was what I wanted and my wife asked me "why not?" If I have sense enough to do so I will attempt to post pics whan it arrives. And IF it is not too difficult I will post pics of my other levers too. Thanks, Goat

Does it have the detachable magazine or the rotary?

Either way, you done good.

In a perfect world, we would spend our days hunting with Savage 99s and fishing with fly rods, and our wives would love us for it.

I don't think you did too badly. There was one locally asking $850. That was back when I'd just gotten my .308 Win 99A (tang safety). These guns are a lot handier than they look. I'd shot them before but never could spend an hour or two just handling the gun. I think you'll like it and if you think you paid too much it won't be too much in a couple of years!

I traded a Kimber Classic 308 and I think I got the better part of the deal.

I searched and found the auction you won. I think you did well. It's a very nice looking 99. It's a newer model (1971-1981). IMO you may have overpaid slightly, but like I said earlier, give it a couple years, you can start it at that price, and it will go up quite a bit.

No such thing as overpaying slightly on 250 99s. If you wanted it and you got it and "slightly" you won.
