Moment of weakness

Post by High Desert Hunter »

My first firearms love is a single action six or five gun, I am naturally very fond of lever action rifles, but for the last 2 decades I have had a growing fondness for the venerable 1911. I have a few, most are the classic 45, one is a 10mm. One I have really wanted was a blued full size 45. Saw a full sized 1911 that had been worked over by Tyler Gun Works, it was reasonably priced and I was weak.

I look forward to breaking it in.

I've always been more of a function over flair guy. I own only one engraved firearm and that was one I inherited from my eldest cousin.

I'm with you, I now own 2 "pretty" guns, this one and my Shiloh Sharps. The Sharps is quite functional, I expect this one will be as well. I certainly wouldn't have paid what I have seen as the going rate, but I am a sucker for color case hardening, and it was a Benjamin more than the "standard" Garrison, and $400 less than the others I've seen.

Excellent. Do you know even the engraved one shoot? Now you can say Are you proud of the fact that such a BEAUTIFUL firearm was used on you to someone as a deterrent.

My prettiest two firearms are a Winchester 1894-BB in 375 Win, and a Rossi 92 brass-frame with blued octagonal 24" barrel in 45 Colt. Both have been 'afield' although I don't take them out in bad weather like I do my stainless/plastic 'all-weather' firearms.

Just because someone adorned a good firearm with decorative engraving or a nice stock finish, shouldn't forever relegate that gun to inferior 'safe queen' status. Certainly if guns had souls (some folks would say they do, or at least the 'classic' ones do), they would be upset that just because they got their hair permed, you wouldn't go on a walk in the rain with them. (Maybe that's why some guys feel guns are easier to get along with than women... :D )

Wonderful 1911 to fall for Dave! I've always wanted to have something that has passed through Tyler Gun Works.

Nice! I'm a sucker for a good 1911 and that one's pretty to boot.

I love a nice 1911. I own several, but none are as pretty as either one of those.

Well the TGW Garrison is NIB no more, had a couple of rain delays, and mud kept the distance to 15 yards, but it was accurate with both 200gr cast and 230gr plated bullets. One gripe, I love the American Holly grips, but they should have used short grip screws. I really hate to say it, but my Rem Rand copy by Tisas is likely every bit as accurate as the Springfield even though it only has a hump and a bump for sights, still, I prefer the configuration of the Springfield hands down. Brought out the Freedom Arms with the new 45 Colt cylinder, 285s loaded over a healthy dose (20K psi) of 2400, moving at 1300 fps according to the Garmin, about 100ish fps faster than from the Ruger with a half inch shorter barrel and much more comfortable to shoot. It's nice to see rain in the Tularosa Basin.

Dave, we've been enjoying the monsoon here, too, in Grant County. More than an inch of rain in the past week. Those who do not live in the desert can't appreciate what a gift it is.
As to Tisas 1911s, they do really, really good work.

Bill I have two, I jumped on the first one for $359 in my hands including tax, shipping, and transfer fee, is is the Cerracote A1 version, runs fine and is certainly combat accurate. Spotted this Parkerized Rem Rand copy at a gunshow here in Alamogordo, last day of the show and his Turkish 1911s weren't moving, so he came down to $400 even including tax, it has been a fantastic investment! I like the fact that it's almost all forged steel.

Dave, I think Tisas got rid of all MIM parts a year or two ago.
