Well boys, I guess after 300 pages and 14,000 some odd posts, it ended.

I guess it was just too much.....for something or someone. But fear not! We can't be beaten down. :D

Well during a break in the rain today I cranked up the saw and started bucking up some of that wood on the front lawn. There is quite a lot. That old maple I had taken down last December was huge. The snow is off it now but there still isn't really a hurry. I have to split it all but can't haul it into camp until I can get the truck in anyway. I don't want to have to move it any more times than necessary.

Now, that's really odd but I'm glad it isn't dead.

NM has been bone dry but rain is forecast for tomorrow. I hope we get it.

Over the past almost 30 years we've lived in this house, we have lost over a hundred pinon trees to bark beetles which chew rings around the trunk under the bark which effectively starves the trees. By the time the damage is noticeable (branches turning brown) it is generally too late and the trees die. There are some pesticides that are effective systemically but they must be applied long before damage becomes apparent. When there is sufficient moisture, the trees produce enough sap so the beetles cannot gain entry under the bark but when there are extensive periods of drought the trees cannot protect themselves. Juniper trees are uneffected.

We are in the process of losing all our ash trees to the emerald ash borer. People don't realize the huge impact this is going to have for at least a generation or more. Ash is used for tons of things that other woods don't do that well. From baseball bats, to snowshoes, baskets. Luckily, it makes good firewood too. I cut them as I see them dying, but there will be more than I'll ever need for stove wood, sadly.

John, pinon trees (a Hispanic name with a tilde over the n, pronounced like pinyon) are evergreens that look very similar to pine trees. They bear small nuts that are about 1/4" in diameter and 3/8" long that have a thin shell and are sometimes roasted. They don't bear nuts every year but when they do, pinon pickers park their cars next to the roads and spread blankets under the trees to catch the nuts when the trees are shaken. The nuts are delicious and I frequently pop a small handful into my mouth, shell them with my teeth and enjoy the meat inside.

Walt,
I burn my wood at camp in a stove. Specifically a Baby Bear. It's a fantastic stove. We had it in our old camp too and took it with us when we left.

Congratulations Walt it's always a pleasure to hand out cigars on such an occasion and a belated happy Birthday to Kristy :D

I have nothing to report other than I flushed a Woodcock this morning as I was walking my son's Dog.
I'm going to ask my son if he knows of any Pinyon Pine trees on the estate he is a woodsman so he should know, however our climate up here in the north east is a lot different to New Mexico.

Thanks guys. We spent the day together yesterday. Went over to Bangor and went to Lowes and looked at flooring. Then went to Sam's for a few things. Then we went to dinner at Geagans. It's a brewery and restaurant that has the best hot wings I've ever eaten.
Pretty low key day, but we really spend very few days like that. She is either working or watching grandkids most of the time.

By the look of the error message it violated a database constraint. That may be configurable by the database administrator but those types of constraints are usually there for a reason.

Got a couple inches of snow last night. Will it ever end?
I know it's because my dad got the old Jeep back out thus week. I wanted to burn brush at camp tomorrow, but it will most likely be too wet. I will still head up though. Camp time is always good.
I may make a pilgrimage down to communist Portland today. Haven't been to Cabelas in a long time. It's a long ride, but I'm thinking of buying one of the Ruger RXM Glock clones.
Did a little work on my DRZ yesterday. It's still in the cellar with the TW. I haven't got my Jeep out yet, but I'm itching to.

We got some more rain last night, lost power for a couple of hours.

Amy and I are driving to Oklahoma City tomorrow to visit our daughter and her family for a few days. Their youngest daughter is turning one year old tomorrow. We'll be on the road well before sunrise.

It's an eight hour drive but since there are no direct flights between Albuquerque and Oklahoma City, it takes about the same amount of time either way.

Nice pic GK! Be a while before my bikes are out! :D

86 degrees? Holy smokes! Sounds too hot for golf.

Glad you are going to visit family Walt. Travel safe, my friend. I hate flying too, and only do it because my son and his family are in Alaska. I still hate traveling! :D

I doubt I'll be burning that brush, but I'm heading to camp tomorrow just the same.
I have a new pistol to try out. I may try and start the tractor too. I haven't been for a couple weeks so I'm not sure what the conditions are up there. I'll see if I can get a few pics for you boys. :D

We got into camp ok. The snow in the road was deep in a few places still, but it was pretty stiff this morning. We burned a little bit of brush, but once past the top of the pile it was still fairly wet.
It's pretty mushy around here so I didn't bother to uncover and start the tractor. I did start the kids 4 wheeler and let that run.
We needed a fire this morning but we surely don't now! It got quite warm this afternoon. After lunch I took the 4 wheeler and rode back out to the truck to see how much we'd struggle on the way out. We will be pulling a Jet Sled with the stuff we hauled in plus a 100lb propane tank going out. Where the deep spots were the 4 wheeler was clawing but I think we'll make it ok. Couldn't even see our tracks from this morning. Its really nice out. I started down the hill towards the stream but chickened out when I got to the top of the steep part. There was a LOT of snow in the road down there, and with it so soft I didn't want to get down in there and not be able to get out (forgot to snap a pic).
I ran about 80 rounds through the new Ruger RXM. Snapped a pic of dad trying it out. It shot really well. I think I will like it. It's basically a Glock 19 but has a better grip angle and is modular. It's also optics ready if I decide to go that route. My gen 4 Glock 19 isn't.

I don't really keep up with semi autos because I almost exclusively shoot revolvers but that sounds like a good one. I'll look it up.
I'm glad to see your pop out with you and shooting. I'll bet he was having a good time. Plus, it looks like a nice day; nice and warm with a fair number of spots with no snow.

Thanks Walt! Haha yeah I get it. I'm all over the place with the firearms I like. I'll focus on something for a while, then switch gears completely for a while. Who knows.....in a couple weeks I'll be all into my Colt Single Actions! :D
We got out without any trouble. It's a much easier trip this time of year. I don't have to haul the enclosed snowmobile trailer and back that and the truck out into the snowbank to get out of the road. I usually end up having to use both front and rear lockers, then again to get out. Now the snow is melted back enough to back the truck down our road a bit. And I just have the utility trailer with the 4 wheeler. Much easier!

Back in the day when I had a choice I preferred revolvers, but with the amount of firepower that bad guys can use I guess a high capacity semi auto makes sense. At least you have a really great place for trying them out

I spent my entire career employed by an industrial sales company. During the mid 80s I was a manager (a miserable job) and I had salespeople working in various parts of Texas and New Mexico whom I visited on a more or less regular basis. During that time I flew an estimated 550 flights on Southwest Airlines and a couple of regional carriers.
It brought me to hate airports, airplanes and all the people who travel on them. I would be perfectly content to never set foot in another airport. That won't be, so I have to content myself with the very minimum; maybe a flight or two per year.

I like flying but absolutely hate airports, my son and his wife spent several hours stuck in an airport because the first plane was delayed so they missed the connecting flight and were rescheduled on a later flight however I did get a message that they have arrived in Vietnam.
