One thing leads to another

Post by Bill in Oregon »

So I was listening to an old favorite last night, John Anderson's classic "Seminole Wind," and got to pondering on how very little I know about the three wars the federal government waged against the Seminole people of Florida, from 1816 to 1858. The central figure of the Second Seminole War was Chief Osceola, who was taken prisoner in 1837 during peace talks under a white flag -- a dastardly move that ruined the commanding General Thomas Jesup's reputation for the rest of his life. At the time of his capture, Osceola was fighting a tonsil infection underlain by malaria that would prove mortal. He died of quinsy -- another old killer we never hear of any more -- on Jan. 30, 1838, at the estimated age of 34, at Fort Moultrie. His mother was Muscogee-Creek and his father is believed to have been a Scottish trader named William Powell. As a result, Osceola was born Billy Powell. And so was I.
I have the Missals' book, "The Seminole Wars, America's Longest Indian Conflict" en route.

Osceola had a number of visitors during his last months in prison. One of them was the artist George Catlin, who among things preserved images of American Indians as well as documenting actors in the Fur Trade.
This was the portrait Catlin left for us.

I agree - whenever I read one thing about history, it leads me to other stuff - I buy tons of 'history' type books.

It is not only interesting in and of itself, but we could all learn from the experiences of those who lived before us.

I found out a lot more about history when I got interested in muzzleloaders, certainly one thing that led to another.

John, I agree that a muzzleloader is the gateway to endless history. Too bad we don’t just give them to all our children.

Y2K's favorite shooting at his grandfather's farm was with my cap and ball revolvers. The apple did not fall far from the tree... :D

I love history of the USA from it's early beginnings on. But my favorite period is the 1800's as things were changing so rapidly, and the US was expanding so quickly then. Rarely good for indigenous peoples who had to try and save themselves from this inrush of foreigners on their soil.
