Vihtavuori doesnt publish pressure estimates and Ive always been curious about their loads with a 300 grain jacketed bullet.
Can quickload estimate chamber pressures for the following powder charges( I added Vihtas velocities for interest sake, 9.5" barrel, 1.752 COAL). Thanks in advance if anyone is interested.
26.4 grains N110, 300 grain speer( unknown bullet), 1555fps
28.7 grains N110, as above 1686fps
Any quickloaders for a 454 Casull load

Re: Any quickloaders for a 454 Casull load
The only Speer bullet I see that's .452 and 300 grains is the Gold Dot HP. If they used a JFP, the bullet would be shorter to maintain 300 grains and thus would leave more room in the case. Using this Speer GDHP #3974 ...
The database shows a water capacity of 46.8 grains for that case and a case length of 1.380". I set the COAL to 1.77" which is the max I believe. I set the barrel to 9.5" total ... which would be cylinder + barrel.
Using 26.4 grains of N110, QL shows 102.2% case fill, 35,250psi pressure peak, and 1558fps.
Using 28.7 grains of N110, QL shows 111.1% case fill, 46,070psi pressure peak, and 1691fps.

Thanks Rimfire M. Thats more conservative than expected. Would it make much difference with the COAL reduced to 1.752? . The ballpark is good news in any case. Im looking to test it in a Rossi lever action and feel better about loads in the 50 KPSI's than 60+. Im guessing somewhere between that min and max load is 1900fps with a 300 grain XTP in the rifles barrel. Will try it on a hog

Setting COAL to 1.752 with the Speer bullet ...
The 26.4 grains of N110 gives 104.5% case fill, 36,840psi peak pressure, and 1572fps from that 9.5" barrel.
The 28.7 grains of N110 gives 113.6% case fill, 48,430psi peak pressure, and 1707fps from that 9.5" barrel.
Let me know if you want me to run the XTP bullet in a 20" barrel.

Thankyou Sir again. And that would be great if you wouldnt mind doing so with the 20" as well.

Are you using the .452 300 grain XTP or the newer XTP Mag? I didn't realize there are two of those things. The Mag is apparently designed for higher velocities. I'll assume the normal one and make a run. Let me know if you've actually got the "Mag" version. Not sure how they differ but they are both in the QL database.
Using the normal XTP 300 grain loaded to 1.752" with 26.4 grains of N110 in a 20" barrel, QL gives 40,990psi peak pressure and 1821fps. This is 109% case fill ... tight.
Using the normal XTP 300 grain loaded to 1.752" with 28.7 grains of N110 in a 20" barrel, QL gives 54,330psi peak pressure and 1952fps. Might have to back off on that one. It shows 118.5% case fill ... more crunch than you might be able to get away with.
An even 28 grains of N110 is 115.5% case fill and gives 48,850psi peak pressure and 1912fps.

Re: Any quickloaders for a 454 Casull load
Thanks RImfire M, yes the regular version is the one I meant. Some fellas prefer the Mag version for high speeds, but then you have the Muzzleloader guys who love the regular version and they are pushing it 2000fps or more in sabots and they get their animals. Apparently it doesnt fragment around these speeds, it just gets flatter and flatter.
Interesting that the max load looks like it wont even fit in the case.
. I read once this can be a problem with N110's data. When the bullets arrive, I will put it to the test. I dont need all that power anyway, the 1821fps is going to be plenty.
