.22 Long Rifle and the Single Six that is. I have been trying to hit the Range at least once a week and spend time working on trigger control and sight alignment. Mostly with .22's. Also spending some practicing my point shooting. I am burning old ammo. I have .22's that I bought back in the 1980's and it needs used!

Today I was shooting some Winchester HP that have to be 40 years old. I had shot some of these years ago and they leaded the barrel horribly. I put a note in the box and stuck them in bottom of one my ammo containers. I ran across them the other day and thought they would be great for point shooting practice.

So I filled a small container with wheel bearing grease and went to the range. I touched each bullet nose in the grease before I loaded them in the gun. I shot for an hour and a half and the gun stayed nice and clean. Wipe a little grease off and it's ready to go next time.

If I remember correctly these were under $10 for 500.

Targets were shot at 25 yards using two hand hold and a barrel rest. I fired 6 shots at each target. And for some unknown reason, each target had one shot about 2" low, in line with the group. Gotta be the old man on the trigger! But overall, that ain't bad for an old guy and old ammo in an old gun.

I didn't go shooting yesterday because it was in the high 30s and the wind was howling. I didn't go today because my shooting buddy had an appointment at the VA, but we will be out there bright and early tomorrow. I bought an as new Single Six a couple of weeks ago with both cylinders; I'm intrigued by it and especially the .22 WMR cylinder. It's the seldom seen 4 5/8" barrel and I shot it pretty well last week. I slicked up the action and have been dry firing it since then. Those gongs are in trouble!

I'm also taking a Marlin Cowboy in .45 Colt, a FA model 97 in .45 Colt and a couple of Rugers in .44 spl. Should be a good morning.

Jim, I'm with Walt. Those are very nice 25-yard pistol groups. That wheel bearing grease solution to the leading issue was pretty smart. Have you ever tried lanolin? Friends who shoot Sniders, Martinis and such at the Victorian Riflemen gathering up near Calgary have discovered that dipping the noses of .577 Snider and .577-450 Martini bullets in Udderly Smooth before chambering and shooting does wonderful things for the bore -- especially in regards to black powder fouling.
Walt, hope you have a wonderful day's shooting. The New Mexico windy season sure forces a fella to pick his days for any but short range work.

Bill .. some place I have a list of all the stuff we tried for lube. From 40 weight engine oil to Bryl Cream hair grease. Before Lee brought out the liquid lube we would melt crayons in a skillet, roll the bullets around in them and let them cool. They worked just fine at 800 to 900 fps. It's quite amazing what will work. I used the wheel bearing grease because it was the first thing I found that I had on hand. No scientific method to it.

A product for nursing mothers, Lansinoh, is almost pure lanolin. It is a purple tube which would be easy enough to throw in for range time.

I shoot quite a bit of .22's in my backyard too --- the 16 yard range setup i have is about right for me with pistols

Sooting a different Ruger, the MK4 predominately but would love to have another Single Six --- the last time i purchased one -and it didnt seem that long ago -- blued with a convertible magnum cylinder with it --- the little rig was $379 plus tax out the door

Alas, they are not that cheap anymore --- so i think a Wrangler model may be in my future
